Recent user interface improvements also included changing the topic title link to point directly to the oldest unread post of a topic instead of the first post. Previously you had to be aware of the purpose of the small yellow icon next to topic titles to get there.
This part is a little disheartening. I understand the reasoning (mostly, making the unread post icon bigger would break layout), but what if a user wants to go to the first post? You're effectively taking that decision away from them. Maybe make this a UCP option?

The topic time is now linked to the first post all of the time.
So there is still a way to go to the first post.

I merged it in terms of "give it a try" if it's not suitable, we can still introduce an option in the UCP

Ok how will end users know that? Also what if one went and click on the topic title then went looking for the first unread post button?
Please note that I will not be porting any of my mods to phpBB 3.1. Sorry for the inconvenience this may cause.

How did they know, that the small icon takes them to the first unread... it has a hover text and users will try it.

This was not changed, so it is still there.

Not necessarily, it depends on the shape of the icon. The one I've used on my site doesn't break the layout but is still big enough for touch screens.

I don't like the new look either so I think I will keep my icon.

If the phpBB team have something to blog about, I'm sure that a post would be up :) (just saying)

Actually there's plenty to blog about, I just haven't gotten around to it in a while, I'll try to find some time later this week.

Is there a release target date for 3.1, or a sense of when it might be ready for general use?

No. You're new here, so you probably didn't realize that the phpBB team doesn't set (or at least publish) goal dates. There are various reasons for this (like people are volunteers and can't necessarily commit time to meet goals), so please don't complain. There are topics that discuss this if you search.

Asking often just gets a "when it's ready" response.

Thanks Steve - no complaints, just curious. Thanks for clarifying.
