well, if it was me then, I would start working on 3.1 instead of messing with doing all this custom work on 3.0

even if it takes a couple of months before the final is released it won't change much as far as the style and the main stuff goes. once it reaches the RC stage it is pretty much set except for bugs etc.

Thank you so much Lumpy. It does seem like a much better (and logical) approach. I was so confused about it and your post has put me to ease. I do understand that you dont advise the RC for a production site yet but atleast I can start developing based on 3.1 now and work towards that. Knowing that I dont need to spend my time building on 3.0.x prosilver is a big relief (have you tried customizing the old verion's mcp to make it responsive? lol). I am exciting to get my hands dirty with 3.1 now. I feel like I am about to open a new present since I havent explored 3.1 yet. Thank you again Lumpy. :)

I am no expert at styling by any stretch of the imagination. However, I do manage to figure out most things.
making things responsive just escapes me how it is done sometimes. I especially have trouble trying to integrate responsive designs of web sites with non responsive phpbb styles.

anyway, lots of luck,

robert

If you want to develop a style, you should definitely start working with phpBB 3.1.

There are no real major template engine or template var changes coming up between RC3 and gold. Only minor improvements which you can integrate (or not) when the time comes.

If you are inheriting from prosilver 3.1 it gets a little bit trickier, but the same applies. Only small changes are still coming.

Just wanna say, the past couple of days I have been playing around with 3.1 for the first time and I simply love it! I am glad I started developing my site based on 3.1 instead of 3.0.x. Atfirst, it appears there arent a huge change other than responsive prosilver but there are so many little things in ACP that makes it really nice. I found it so easy to create a custom theme based on 3.1 prosilver. It took me a lot lesser codes than it usually takes in 3.0.x to create a custom one. My favourite is the customize tab in ACP. Its so easy to install, activate and de-activate styles and most of all - purging the cache. LOVE IT! Its just 1 click now which is so helpful since I usually waste so much time purging template and theme caches separately when developing styles. Also the tree structure on template inheritance is nicely done. I just started and I've only explored the styles section and I am already loving what I see. If users dont upgrade to 3.1, they have no idea what they are missing. :)

Thanks to all who were involved in phpbb progress this far. Although its on RC, it appears pretty stable already and I havent come across any issues yet. :)

Yep, sorry I should have clarified. Was just basing it of github builds. They absolutely can add more if needed and it will be released when ready. ;)

I have a few questions:

When is phpBB 3.1.0 planned to be released?

What will happen to all of our existing mods?

What will happen to all of our existing installed themes?

Barring any major issues, should be within the next month or two maybe even in a few weeks. Can't give you a specific date right now though.
Mr.Ze wrote:What will happen to all of our existing mods?
Most MODs will not work with 3.1.
Mr.Ze wrote:What will happen to all of our existing installed themes?
Same as with MODs but without the "most" part. Existing 3.0 styles aren't going to work very well if at all. If one happens to work it will be missing a lot of features.

I can't believe how hard I find it posting here via my iPhone now after having used 3.1RC3. Wow man, just shows how much better the responsive prosilver is. 8-) Hope phpbb.com is updated with 3.1 soon.

The usual advice is that "it will be ready when it's ready". However, did you read David's post two posts above yours?
