If one wanted to apply only the security fixes, would simply making the changes detailed in the commits listed below be enough?

why would one not want to do the rest of the updates?

if you are worried about other changes to your files then simply do the autoupdate and it will not overwrite your changes since that is what it is for.

Because in the forum instance I'm managing there are hand-made custom modifications (not packaged mods) even in some "base code" (registration antispam, user badges, etc).

I was just looking to do the security updates quickly, so that I could focus on an eventual move to 3.1.

From my understanding, the auto-updated in 3.0 is designed to ignore custom code. If it didn't, it'd be constantly breaking MODs and that's just silly.

I know its been a long time since 3.0.12 but are code change downloads no longer available? E.g. last one was "phpbb-3.0.11_to_3.0.12_subsilver2.txt" for styles updates.

Are they only available online from area51 instead these days?

Possibly but you risk introducing changes that might be dependent on changes from previous commits. Only way to find out would be to try it. Back up your files first.

got also this error: Trailing paths and PATH_INFO is not supported by phpBB 3.0

try to update from 3.0.12 tot 3.0.13 with the automatic updater
