The fact that the design and ability of 3.1 has got me intrigued is something, but I am curious if the mods from 3.1 will work on 3.2 and so on.
For the most part, we anticipate that 3.1 extensions will work fine with 3.2. The only exceptions are those specifically using existing functions that are being removed, but the authors that used anything in functions_compatibility.php should expect that their extensions wouldn't work long-term. In any case there aren't many authors using those functions anyways.

tldr; extensions should still work on forums that go from 3.1 to 3.2.

I use phpBB to power my whole site, the forum is just a small part of it. I'm currently in the process of making it compatible with 3.1 with no end in sight (lots of work, not enough spare time). Reading through this topic it seems like the update of the forum to 3.2 will be pretty painless, but what about the rest of the site? Will this cause me major headaches as the current upgrade is?

It shouldn't. There is a few incompatibles changes but they all are simple to change and, I hope, will be documented.

Major security patches 3.0.x when needed?

Post by steve59 »

Dear reader,

We could test the migration of 3.0.x to 3.1.x (and site integration afterwards) on a separate server,

However, due to the fact that a % sign is still not allowed in your password when you run
database_update.php,
we cannot go live with this update yet
(our hosting provider won't let us choose our own database password, though they are working
on a solution to change that)

Our question is: would you please continue to supply (major) security patches (when needed) to
3.0.x
, until everyone can update, regardless of what database password they use?

Best regards,
Steve

Sadly that I'm been banned there... but I don't think that is something we need to discuss here.

doesn't look any different than 3.1 not sure what might be different that doesn't show up front.

I haven 't paid much attention to what 3.2 is supposed to be but I expected a new prosilver for some reason.

I think they had said that they would not make a change so drastic in design :)

Look at many of the icons. Area51 is using FontAwesome glyphs for icons (which I find a bit uglier than what we already have).

This is planned, but not for 3.2. :)

I agree, but unfortunately, I'm not sure if there's anything that can be done. I fiddled with font-awesome for a while and found that styling them with color can be somewhat complex.

There's plenty that can be done. For example, you can revert back to standard images, or you can move forward with SVG.

However, that's really beyond the scope of this topic. If anybody is interested, see the FontAwesome topic on Area51.
