[Poll] Community Choice: Next Official Extension

Post by MattF »

The Extensions Development Team would like to ask you (again) to vote for another official extension!

Our previous community choice resulted in our Auto Groups and Pages extensions. We have a few more ideas and would like the community to help us decide which of them would be the most popular:
  • Advertisement Management - Ability to add multiple advertisements and display in various locations (header, footer, specific forums, etc.)
  • Google's new reCAPTCHA - spam countermeasure, more information
  • Paypal Donations - Add donations with option to add users to groups based on payment
  • Welcome PM - send new users a customised welcome private message
The poll will last 2 weeks.

The complete features of the chosen extension will be defined once the poll is completed.
Formerly known as VSEMy ExtensionsPlease do not PM me for support.

Thanks for asking. Unfortunately, none of them really appeal to me, but I think that PayPal would help the most users (or possibly ad management), and it's the one that I would most likely implement on my board.

I also don't understand why Google's NoCAPTCHA ReCAPTCHA needs an extension. Doesn't phpBB 3.1 support CAPTCHA plug-ins any longer? If it does, wouldn't this just be a plug-in? (And, personally, I would suggest dropping all of the old broken CAPTCHAs and adding the new ReCAPTCHA to the core.)

^^^ what Steve said about broken CAPTCHA's. Why include them in the package when:-
1) they don't work
2) all SPAM advice on the forum tells you not to use them due to point 1

My vote is for the Welcome PM, but then I was always in a minority

Advertisement Management ? is that similer to a MOD that was available, a few years ago, that let us put a banner in different places around the board? ie, a banner/ picture as opposed to a google ad.

***sigh*** so what was the point of me making this topic? It should be in the core code, not as an extension and all the other worthless captchas should be removed, IMHO.

Because it wouldn't be added in until 3.2? ReCAPTCHA would be a new feature so would technically need to be added to a feature release, the next one being 3.2. Creation of the official extension doesn't necessarily mean this won't be integrated into the core later.

It's supposed to be. When a major version is released the feature set included in that version should remain unchanged in maintenance releases so one shouldn't expect new features in 3.1.x maintenance releases. One would/should expect new features in 3.2.

yes, however, you can put whatever you want in those places. banners, boxes, adsense, etc. etc.

just as you always could put whatever type of ads you wanted anywhere you wanted in the html code.

there was never a need to do banners instead of adsense or adsense instead of banners. it is all just html and can be put wherever you wanted it.

of course, now, the difference is that it will be done with an extension instead of having to add the ad place holders in the core code.

I voted for a Welcome PM extension.

Since the extension team have more ideas for an official extension.

I would like to know if the post history feature that exists in phpBB 3.0.x exist in phpBB 3.1.x or not.

If not then such extension is what I would like to see.

What post history feature? :?
What I mean is that when you edit a post in phpBB 3.0.x the original post is saved with a copy of the edited post something like this.
original post - <timestamp>
test a

edit a post
testing

post history (you view the post history by clicking a link)
test a

I know XenForo has that feature unless it was removed from the latest version. I think vBulletin has that feature.
