Paid styles and extensions for PHPBB

Post by koraldon »

I just saw the following style:
http://themeforest.net/item/flatboots-p ... ew/8536771
and wondered why paid styles and extensions are not advertised on this site as well?
I use free extensions and donate to the creators, but I think that having options for paid add-ons as well will only enhance the viability of phpbb.

Hmm yes your post makes logic but I think phpBB only want to concentrate on their software only and that thing which you mention need a separate setup so that can be the reason phpBB is not doing it.

Ah yes, Flatboots :)

I guess that paid themes would never make it to their customize database due to the way licensing is set up within phpBB.

Possibly, but even if the license were compatible, if the style isn't submitted here as a contribution, it won't be listed. Contributions listed elsewhere haven't been checked by the phpBB team, so you use them at your own risk.

MyBB also has this where people cannot submit paid plugins and themes into the plugin database.

I would simply say because this site is open source?

Joomla is open source as well, and has paid extensions. Wordpress required a free for use version, but also publishes paid extensions, and so on. Drupal has also tons of paid extensions.

The issue is not that I'm for "paid" extension, but they do exist. For some people they might be the solution need, but they are hard to find.
Having a "section" for them in the extension database, would make it easier, helping both the users and extension developers.

I didn't check it myself, but I think it is not possible currently to submit a paid extension.

Everything in our extensions database is free.
What would be the purpose of a "paid" section, when someone else could duplicate it for free?

You can just put a link to download at developer site, see:
http://extensions.joomla.org/category/a ... -a-content

Easyblog is paid download, while flexicontent is free.
You can download flexicontent from the website directly.

You don't get it.
Everything here is free.
Links to other sites would be spam, which is not allowed here.

I think it's a matter of focus.

As far as the phpBB you want to go?

See joomla and wordpress, both have free and paid extensions and even for this are accused of spam.

Paving the way for paid extensions everybody wins. in quality and service

I think there should be freedom to do what every Admin/Webmaster wants.

I personally use styles of payment and payment extensions, not all developers offer a good job and support, it all depends on who does it...

Recall that phpBB has a validation process, allowing extensions and styles free without errors,
free security problems, etc. that it can not offer another author or developer.

Best regards.

It's also a licensing issue. phpBB Extensions and Styles need to be GPL v2, because they depend on phpBB code to operate. Selling your own GPL v2 code means that anyone buying it can then turn around and give it away or redistribute it for a fee.

I follow WordPress issues as well, and I know that plugin reseller sites exist that undercut the original authors. So yes, there are WordPress contributions for a fee available on sites outside wordpress.org, but it doesn't come without problems.

Be careful what you wish for? ;)

Darcie, thanks for the insight - I was not aware about the GPL v2 limitation.
I fully support and hope phpbb and extensions will be for ever free. However, like for other open source software, there should be an easy option to find paid extension - with validation. nobody wants spammers and cheaters.
For the long term health, this can assist phpbb. For example in Joomla there is the Akeeba guy, who sell a pro version for his software, but has a basic (and very good) version for free, as well he integrates code in the core joomla.
I think that some support (not actual download or validation on phpbb.com) of paid addons to phpbb can be good for the ecosystem.

WordPress paid plugins and themes sold outside wordpress.org aren't validated by anyone, to my knowledge. So I'm not sure how adding something like this here would be expected. Does Joomla have a program like this? It's been a bajillion years since I've looked at Joomla. ;)
