Other users posting from this ip

Post by Piscator » Mon Sep 28, 2015 8:33 pm

ok not so much of a support question but a bit curious.

what are the chances of a user being assigned the same ip address by their isp as another member.

its happened 3 times now, 1 user in question having the same ip address as 3 other users at some point in time one of which on the other end of the country and another presumably upstanding member of the forum leaves only one member im not entirely sure about.

anyone else ever came across this ?

If the IP addresses are at different times then it is possible. Most users will have dynamic IP addresses so every time they reboot their router they will be given a new IP address. Once the original IP address is released then it is available to be allocated to another user.

So to answer your question

Yes it is possible - but the odds are, I would say, quite long that you would get three members with the same IP address on one forum.

the time of the posts by other members are quite far apart by a couple of months.

didnt ever think id see something like this on the forums though, really must be short on IPv4 to have 4 members with exact same ip at some point.

Maybe it is a small ISP.

Another possibility is that they have used the mobile network to post as this can use only a few IP addresses.

There are some ISPs that will give everything single user the same static IP address (I recall having a big issue from one of these ISPs due to them flooding a few websites with unwanted traffic yet legitimate users were using the same IP address as the flooders).

This ISP wasn't small, but medium sized and is/was (not sure if they are still around as I cannot recall their name) on the east coast of the US.

just another example of the fact that IP addresses do not mean anything as far as being able to identify a person or where they are etc. etc.

IP addresses belong to an interface. The interface does neither have to be the only one, nor has its device to be a computer. And a computer can be used by zero to many persons.

In other words: three people can be behind one IP address. Or three people can use the same computer. Or a load balancer uses 3 IP addresses parallely for one computer used by one person.

Do you need even more permutations? Identifying individuals needs more than only that one thing (the IP address) of the client. Look at how those 3 accounts formulate or their style of writing.

Where is that option? I remember I saw that once but haven't seen it in a long time and don't know how to get there.

Btw does phpbb record in a table the different IPs from where a user may log?

I've seen the phpbb_sessions or something but it's almost empty. I'd like to know (or to code if needed) every time a user logs with a different IP from last time so it should go to the DB for later use by the admins.

Mods?

I can only see the last one and I'd like to see them all. Where is that option?
