I'm not quite sure where you are getting your figure. I updated a customized style from 3.1 to 3.2 in about 30 minutes, and it doesn't inherit from any other styles. ;)

I personally will be holding off the update for various reasons, but will most likely do it after a few maintenance releases.

Grab yourself the 3.2 rc2 and give it a shot with merging.
Start with the theme directory / CSS and you'll see that you can multiply your 15 minutes several times.
i was referring to updating a style for example from phpBB 3.1.9 to 3.1.10... not going from 3.1 to 3.2. that being said, once the initial conversion has been made from 3.1 to 3.2 in a style, it then becomes simple after that ;)

Ah - yes, I totally agree with this! :)
Within the 3.1 line updating was a thing of a couple of minutes. And I expect the same for 3.2, once it's prepared.
Today I started the work to convert my own style over to 3.2
It's only CSS and the overall_header - the rest is inheriting from prosilver.
But the CSS stuff took me a couple of hours. Now I have a good base, only some fine grinding have to be done.
Next step: testing the extensions.
So - looking forward for the gold release!

Hi, *

please do it ... :)

Are you even reading the replies to this topic? Here are some replies that say it's possible, have already been done and didn't take an eternity:

So please stop trying to make an issue about a non-issue and attempting to make a point that doesn't exist. Will you have to do work to convert your styles? Well yes, of course. You would have had to do that regardless of if we used FA or not. Do you have to use FA in your own style? No, but if it inherits from prosilver then it's probably better to go with FA overall.

Okay, you do not have to admonish me. It's not about my own style.
Perhaps you did not recognize the urgency? I do not know what your goal is.

Today I got used to FontAwesome while adapting things to my needs. And I really like it.
From my point of view this will make things way easier for extension authors as well as for style authors.
Icons for extensions will fit perfect into every style using FA. Style authors can easily adapt the colours of the icons, without the need of creating new grapics - as well as using extensions with icons don't need to find / create fitting icons for other styles. Everything looks like out of the box, right on...

Then I went and tested extensions I need for my main board. Results:
  • About us 2.0.3
    - Adapted the icon for FA
  • Advanced BBCode Box 3.1.3
    - works
  • Amazon Affiliate 1.0.3_rc1
    - works
  • B3P Who was here Modul 0.0.1
    - works
  • Board3 Portal 2.1.0
    - Adapted the icon for FA
    - some tweaks needed, can be found here
  • Fancybox 1.0.1
    - works
  • Harmony Style Modifikation 1.0.0
    - works (my own extension with all style changes - favicon, meta tags, moved custom field under signature, links to static pages, etc)
  • Nv who was here 1.2.2
    - works
  • Profile side switcher 0.0.1
    - works
  • Recent Topics 2.2.0-RC1
    - works, but only with the display on top of the forum
  • Sort Topics 1.0.0
    - works
  • Topic Author 1.0.1
    - works
All done and tested on a local XAMPP install. Next step: testing on the real server and with PHP7 and final adaptions. But this will be done with the final release.

Fine, and probably good work.
However… Will a number of GUI issues for the administrators and users be fixed?
There are numberous user issues that have been hanging around for years.
For administrators who are not CLI geeks, the permissions system is very complicated to navigate.
Those issues are to me much more important than internal machinery upgrades.

All the Best for 2017,
Robert Cailliau

If I get it right, this forum is running 3.2 now, right?

So a problem in the forum might or might not be a problem with 3.2 itself.

But of course it doesn't have to.

-e- Ah, intransparent mod edits.
Well, sorry for dropping that here.

Have a happy new year.

We are running 3.2 now, yes. Upgrading our forum is never easy due to the complexity of the server setup. We are working on getting these server issues resolved but, so far, nothing that will affect the 3.2 release. We have MichaelC doing double-time on the hamster wheel. :D
