What is weird is the fact that all these providers did it at the same time, that is weird. Sounds like ... a ....conspiracy, or a glitch in the Matrix
More like the whole EIG buyout bull.
Yes, it seems like 4 or 5 hosts involved in these discussions were bought out by EIG in 2010/11 - coincidence based fault, coincidence of fault timelines affecting most of us in the last 7 days? .. or something else??

Oh yes, and does this maintenance notice from our hosting provider have anything to do with the issue, as this was 1 week before and may have planted the Varnish Cache seed? (or do I mean ... bug??).

"As part of our longstanding effort to keep our servers fast and reliable,
the server hosting blablabla.com is scheduled for routine maintenance on
Monday, April 17 between 10pm and 12am ET. You can expect approximately
30-60 minutes of downtime while the server reboots.

Please be assured we're doing everything possible to make this a smooth
transition."

All the best,
Cal :)

and then approx a year after the buyout is when the server moves are done and the old host and all its customers get ruined.

That is unfortunate, my contract is up at the end of the year. Maybe I'm going shopping again?

And wouldn't I need to redo it every time I update phpbb?
how often do you update? either way it is better than having these problems.
Plugged your code in to htaccess and it worked like a dream. 8-)

Hi Theonardo!

Can you detail the exact problem(s) you had and what the .htaccess added lines fixed? ... as there are various levels of success in doing this and by setting the forum Cache folder to permissions "777".

For us, it did address the account switching issue, but the sessions are still a little "ropey" when hitting board index, as it takes us back to a week past Saturday evening. So, CTRL F5 is required to display the current session properly.

Again, this could depend on Host, Browser or phpBB version, although there is no clear picture as yet!

Some consideration, if you were on Cloudflare and my extension nor the mod_cloudflare sat by your host dealt with your native issue.. there is something more to know. :geek:

There is the basic version (free) of CF and others, wich one you were running?

As well as the focus on "Varnish Cache" and "CloudFlare", I would like to have people experiencing these problems to share (where they can) their own stats.

If this is a useful comparison for others, here are some of our web host figures:

Disk Space Usage: 11,933.63 MB total disk space used.
- keep in mind, this is "after" the host rep/specialist left 2 old copies of our entire public_html root folder (both around 3.5GB each).

File Count: "Your account contains more than 9740 directories and may pose a potential performance risk to the server. Please reduce the number of directories for your account to prevent possible account deactivation." ... again, this is AFTER two copies of Public_html were made by the hosting provider's staff!! (so triple the figure it should be).

Monthly Bandwidth: Anything from 1.5GB to 6.5GB, going back to March 2014.

CPU Throttling: "Error - There was a problem in completing your request. Please contact support with incident ID: D5911143888F5B66B889743F920FD866."

So, you tell me, how much of the above stats "triggered" the Varnish Cache .. and later figures elevated by their staff's handling of root directories etc?

Seems quite the departure from our host beating their chest regarding UNLIMITED THIS, UNLIMITED THAT and UNLIMITED THE OTHER!! a few years ago!!

there is no such thing as "unlimited"

this quote from HM user agreement allows them to do anything they want.
USER AGREEMENT section 15 Resource Usage, sub-section a. Shared Hosting iii wrote: However, HostMonster reserves the right to limit processor time, bandwidth, processes, or memory in cases where it is necessary to prevent negatively impacting other Subscribers.
lets face it who determines what "negatively impacting other Subscribers"

a varnish cache could be applied due to user complaints or a automated program.

Basically, I informed them (by phone) of the Varnish discussion going on over here, and my issues (same one here) began after the maintenance they did. He confirmed they did in fact fire up Varnish on the shared servers.....
if what tech told 10000fists is correct varnish cache was applied to shared servers. So I suspect they grouped accounts that were negatively impacting other Subscribers when they did that maintenance mid last month either to get accounts to upgrade or leave.

my question is was the "varnish cache" poorly written by mistake or on purpose?

... Indeed not, but we were a tad closer to genuine "unlimited" than we are now, as these quotes are riddled with little pesky asterisks next to them, read the small print, Read the small print, READ the small print!!!

... that could be the most sinister and unpopularly accurate statement of the day!

To think with these modern restraints, every time a hosting rep goes in and fiddles with your account, they can 'potentially' add significant increases to your overall file count, monthly bandwidth and total shared disk space!! ... and you just have to eat it.

Looks like this topic has now dried up! ... so I sincerely hope that most of you good folks have found answers to your issues. Our last couple of weeks, trying to resolve issues with our host in live chat - well, it's been a comedy of errors. They have no interest in properly investigating issues, they don't listen to what you are saying, they appear "soulless and cold" ... and their knowledge of issues you are trying to explain as clearly as possible, seems very below par. They even take moments to paraphrase quotes which have nothing to do with your issues and they can't wait to hit you with "Can I help you with anything else today?" ... even when you are still in the midst of explaining/trying to resolve the current problem.

I hope in the next few weeks, we find a new home - we can't do much worse in all honesty!!!

9+ years or decent, friendly support ..... 2 solid weeks of stress, disappointment and misery.

All the best,
Cal :)

I've ended up moving to the cloud plan. They did it for less than the shared hosting (50c/m less), flatly refused to change anything on the original account and seemed totally disinterested in the security issue it was causing.

Lets deal with the elephant in the room, shared servers are the trailer parks of servers :D I am probably going to go with the VPS next time. BlueHost did me a solid on this caching issue, I like to reward those who produce solid effort when I can; I also like to punish those who don't. I have been in customer support for my whole life, and I can verify the customer is always right. Anyone who doesn't take heed of that is doomed to fail. And when I am wearing the customer pants, I expect to be right.

I went with the BlueHost shared server because of their shared server policy of keeping the "less-than-desirable" sites off the shared servers. Unlike some host providers that come to mind. An otherwise legit site could get blocked by proxies and filters by no fault of their own :(
