Support Policy Question

Post by theexplorer »

I apologize in advance if this is in the wrong section. Do you deny support to users operating sites that have LEGAL pornography, are right wing, or are LEGAL hacking sites? No disrespect to Mybb but Mybb denies support to users who operate sites like those topics. (I COMPLETELY understand their policy but it does not work for me).

I DO NOT plan to make sites like this but I want to know if in theorey you support legal sites despite how controversial they may be.

I want a forum software where support staff are pro free speech.

Thank you

For PORN sites, we ask that they give the URL to an official Support/Community Team member, so it can be recorded in their usernotes. This is because we ask they don't link to the porn sites on our site as this is a general usage site that's open to all ages. Right wing, is a little vague, but if those sites support hate and violence that's not something we'd be comfortable supporting. For legal hacking, again a little vague. For this situation I'll assume you mean sites like xda developers, then yes.

Do you see the pink box above that links to phpBB.com Board-Wide Rules and Regulations? There you'll find one answer in 1.d. Hacking is not covered anywhere, so it is allowed.

Except the Illegal Activity rule would disallow it, if said activity were illegal, like hacking other peoples devices.

So for sites with adult films you pm a staff member?

For right wing sites what I mean is offensive/hateful sites but NOT violent and NOT participating in illegal activities. OF COURSE I DO NOT plan to make NOR DO I SUPPORT sites like this. I ALSO DO NOT plan on making sites that have adult films.

I am just curious if support staff are pro free speech.

You see what mybb does is if they don't approve of your site. They put a red flag on you avatar saying that you have been denied support. Also if denied and you start a help thread your thread is locked.

Do you have a similar policy?

Thanks.

I do NOT support sites like those above but I am pro free speech.

In essence we are very much pro free speech. We won't deny you support just because your board has a controversial subject. We do however ask that you respect the fact that this site is aimed at a general audience and that many of our members are minors. So when your board includes legal pornography, we ask that you don't post your link in public, as minors could also follow that link. Instead, you can PM a staff member, who will add the link to your private profile, so all of our support team members can still see the link and help with any trouble on your board where the link is necessary to resolve the problem. ;)

The same goes for sites that are considered offensive, as is also outlined in our rules. We won't deny you support just because your site has some controversial points of view but do want to consider that some links to boards after better served not being in public (again considering minors as well). Whether a link can or can't be posted in public is at the discretion of the Community Team. We do however very clearly draw the line at illegal activities. We don't wish to support boards that commence in illegal activity from whichever sort that might be, and any such accounts will be flagged and denied support.

We do deny support for sites/users that have WAREZ(crackz, serials, full download links[movies, mp3's, applications], etc)[ie illegal actiivty]. For those we do lock their topics. Otherwise the only time we generally lock topics is when topics are getting out of hand or people are necro-posting 6 and 10+ year old topics. But at the end of the day, we aren't your local government, and therefore aren't required to allow you free unbridled speech on this site.

You can see we've actually opened up our General discussion to much wider topics than in the past. We only ask people not to start flame wars. Those will get locked and or put in the trash bin. We have rules and reserve the right to enforce to those rules. If someone is looking for a place to run roughshod over the users and volunteer staff, then they will find themselves on the wrong end of a warning or ban.

I have been doing support here for a long time, and the only sites I have refused support to are warez sites. We used to refuse support to sites that did not display the phpBB copyright, but that is no longer a policy; it is discretionary with the supporter.

No one, Team Member or Community member, HAS to support anything.
