What Happened to the Automatic Update package?

Post by JustChise »

Hello. I am planning to update from 3.2.0 to 3.2.1. What happened to the automatic update packages for the new release updates? I've never updated using any other method and quite frankly, none of the other options are ideal or even really useful since I have minor edits on a few of the template files. So I guess my question is why are they not on the page and how do I get them?

Hi,

at the moment there is bug in the updater, which led to problems by a lot of people. That is why we remove it from the download page. But there is still an option to download it: https://download.phpbb.com/pub/release/3.2/3.2.1/

Handle with care and take your backups before you start.

Thanks for that Crizzo. It's the first info I've seen on that and, I suspect, like many we're looking forward to be able to do it and keep up to date.

It might be useful for many if that info was included on the update download page tho.

When you follow the instructions correctly and don't make any mistakes, then the updater is absolutely okay. But this is easily said from me point of view. ;)

:D Yeah, and that is sometimes a problem -understandable but still a problem. To you guys who spend massive amounts of time updating code for phpBB.. most things are self evident but to the vast majority it means nothing.

I've been running since the late 3.0 stuff (in the days when mods and updates where all hand done) so have a basic understanding (very basic) - whilst the conversion to 3.1 was a nightmare at the time the resulting ease of doing updates and adding extensions makes it all wonderfully easy but I still easily get confused when instruction talk in terms or phrases that mean nothing to me.

I do applaud the time and effort you guys put in on our behalf tho.

I agree here as I've always used the updater and aside from mistakes I made when I was a novice with phpBB upgrades, I've never had any issues. It's always the quickest way too and I make sure to check the diffs/conflicts during the merge process to ensure I'm not messing anything up.

But yea like you said, must take a backup first which I always do.

Will the auto update packages be made available again? (Before we could download a 3.1.x > 3.1.y update package and merge files with changes)

This was a very quick and easy way to update for people that have made manual code and layout changes.

Overwriting the entire package and re-adding all of the changes again is a huge step backwards.

Oh what I'd do for a Wordpress type update option, one click and its done.

I agree, I'm not nearly the genius many here are and anything that makes it easier would be appreciated

The auto-updater for 3.1.11 is not affected by this bug in the 3.2.1-updater, because it is not using this new-installer/updater.

So feel free to choose it: https://download.phpbb.com/pub/release/3.1/3.1.11/

I just used that as an example, I think what we need is an update package for 3.2.0 > 3.2.1

Will the bugs be fixed? I'm holding off updating for now as manually recoding 4 forums is a lot of work.

Since 3.1 it is not recommended to modify core code so there should be no need for the auto-updater. If you do decide to edit stuff just keep notes so you can add them back after an update.

Are the auto update bugs being worked on or is this option no longer available?
