I suspect that most on here have no idea how they compare except that phpBB is somewhat cheaper than either of the others (ie phpBB is FREE)

You have to decide what you require, and see which one best suites you.

Without any context? Based on the general content of your post, I recommend buying XenForo to benefit from their paid support service.
I wrote the thing that does BBCodes in 3.2.

You can also check out IPB.
Also take into account that the majority of extensions and styles will cost extra for those forums.
What are your plans? Is it a hobby or do you aim to get income from the site?

OK, Thank you for sharing this. I've done searches like this and come up with all these sites, but honestly it's tough to weed out which of these review sites are bias or just flat out swing towards one brand. For example this one, see screen shot:

NVM the add image isn't working for me.

https://itxdesign.com/vbulletin-vs-xenforo-vs-ipb/ that's the site I was looking for. This came up in top 4 from the search string you suggested. Go here and you can see phpBB is coming up even with the others, however when you look at user reviews, it takes a leap forward. Yet other searches have pages that are pro Vbulletin and then others are pro xenforo. I'm just trying to cut through the malarkey and find what is legit.

I'm sorry, I'm looking to create a community like this one: https://www.photographytalk.com/forum I don't like the forum software they have on there. From what I can tell, phpBB works with both Joomla and Wordpress, so that gives me options. Hence the reason I'm selecting forum software first, as this will be for my site the core, and I want to make sure from a user experience I have the best.

Thank you. Now you bring up a good point I need to consider, is the availability of extensions for each of these. This will offer scalability in the future. Hmmm, will need to research that as well. Now is that what you are using?

My plans?

As I pointed out for another thread I'm looking to create a site like https://www.photographytalk.com but I want to focus on fine art photography. I dig the layout of things, but don't like what they have for their forum. Most likely for the first few years while I build a name for myself, I most likely won't be making any money expect from Google adsense or Amazon affiliate programs. Why do you ask, will one of these forum softwares work better towards income opportunities?

Thank you!

Hey guys, one other question perhaps you can help me on. From a security standpoint, in real world no BS talk, how is phpbb to lock up and remain hardened?

There are no known security issues with phpBB and each version goes through a security audit before release http://www.sektioneins.de/en/index.html

Thank you . So is phpBB considered open source?

BTW, I have a programmer that will be doing all the work for me. I'm just doing my homework at this point.

Any comments you hear from others about phpBB's lack of security is because they lack of knowledge of the product. phpBB2 had a lot of issues with exploits and that has carried over to phpBB3. That perception persists despite the fact it was released a decade ago.

If anyone tell you it has a history of security flaws simply ask them for example. If they respond they will link to some page that lists a supposed exploit that never worked or another that existed in beta version for 2005. ;)
So is phpBB considered open source?

Yeah, you addressed one of these things I keeping seeing on some boards is comments on security gaps, while others say different.

Those saying otherwise are mis-informed or are going by phpBB 2/3.0.x era information.
