"Enterprise-like" phpBB implementations and phpBB experts workshops

Post by ‫jonnydavis61 » Mon Apr 16, 2018 5:29 pm

Hello all,

The company that I work for researching about various "forum-platforms" we can use as our next generation forum. As someone who familiar with phpBB, I've offered the relevant parties to check it out.

The company which I work for considered a "large" company and the relevant team who considering this future solution respects open-source solutions in-general, but still, interested to know the following:
  • Are there any "enterprise-like" phpBB implementations in the world? with "enterprise" I mean that the system used heavily with various demands (high volume of posts, high number of users, security, easy extensions creation, customization, etc.)
  • Are they any "official" or less official phpBB experts workshops (I'm not talking on single freelance) that has phpBB expertise in a sense of customizing themes (as the easy part) and coding specific needs and solutions as plug-able and easy to update plugins, extensions, etc? (which seems like the most important demand)
In summary - seems that the related party loved the technology, but, want more "enterprise-like" escorting, support and the ability to specifically customize needs and demands in a "building-blocks" way of working.

Any info, lead, tip will be highly appreciated.

BR,

Jonny.

Not enterprise in the traditional sense, but bokt.nl is fairly huge.

Which BBS are you using right now? Like, the current generation.

a "large" company
phpBB can deal with many use cases:
  • many posts created by many users per day
  • many users per day almost only reading posts
  • many board searches being queried per minute
Bottlenecks are:
  • too many forums being created, like 500+
  • it's still a BBS and not a newsgroup; there are a couple of subscriptions for notifications but sending every new post per e-mail is not intended by design
  • no WYSIWYG editor; people have to get used to BBCode markup to format texts

Not that I ever heard/read of. You're better off hiring/dedicating one person to absolutely know how to control the board and preferably also knows large parts of its code to answer questions that would otherwise needs lots of trial-and-error attempts (the manual is by far not complete). Also consider that seeking and getting support for phpBB is trivial (you can always search here for similar problems like yours which have been answered already) and for free (that doesn't apply to many other BBSes). There are no plug-ins (manipulating the bus/flow), only extensions (reacting to events); knowledge and support are the same here: easy to access; there's no shortcut to mastering it - whoever wants to write extensions has to learn it and can also ask the guy who knows large parts of the code if it is possible and which approach would be the best.

Absolute biggest thing that prevents phpBB from being adaptable to an enterprise environment in my eyes is two things:

- Lack of ability to integrate LDAP groups into phpBB groups
- Lack of ability to maintain and LDAP authentication system (for admins/staff) and a separate login system for the general public
