I would never want to see a WYSIWYG. I hated those things in forums like Xenforo. You're trying to copy text from an article or something and the whole damn formatting comes with it. With great extensions that provide a wealth of BBcode and embed features, you don't need it. If one were to desire such functionality then it should be via an extension, and I believe one exists right now for WYSIWYG.

Given the fact extensions expand the features of phpBB by in large part, the only two things I can see worth being added to the core are two factor authentication and a means of auto update like what WordPress has.

Forum program does not contain an editor WYSIWYG , best to avoid use because it will cause the escape of members of the forum and unwilling to participate.
The participant takes 10 minutes to write in an editor WYSIWYG , it will take 30 minutes to editor bbcode
If the editor does not care and does not suit you, the editor is required by more than 70 percent of forum owners

Can you show any kind of evidence for this, a poll or a statement from a developer, anything?

I would be more interested in what the forum board users wanted rather than board owners - the two are not the same
