How to mass block a country from spamming my forum?

Post by canhcam1023 » Thu Jun 28, 2018 8:31 am

Hi,

Got a forum up and running ok.

The only bug in the boot is I am now swamped by spammers. The are from Russia and Kiev and although I have a moderation queue to vet newbies, the spammers now fill the queue!

How do I have the forum prevent these pukes from even signing up?

Regards

IPs arent necessarily country specific but you don't even need to do that.

You just need a good non-searchable Q&A in your antispam and it'll stop straight away.

Please visit Preventing Spam in phpBB3 for various options for fighting spam in phpBB.

How to configure Q&A
  1. Administration Control Panel (ACP) > Spambot countermeasures> Installed plugins > click the dropdown box and select Q&A (it will be greyed out)
  2. Click the configure button then click add
  3. Add your question and answer (you need a Q&A for each language you have installed) click submit
  4. Click "back to previous page" then click "back"
  5. Select Q&A from the dropdown box (again)
  6. Click submit at the bottom of the page.
  7. Done.

To corroborate, I can confirm that adding Q & A fixes most issues. You don't need to ban an entire country's worth of members!

Get a program like Opentracker (their old version works well) and block them at the server level.

Get a program like Opentracker
2018, still not using links on the internet. I guess you don't mean the BitTorrent tracker... and if you mean https://www.opentracker.net/‎ then I hope there's a version not relying on JavaScript and/or frames, as this website's domain is blacklisted in most ad blockers.

Sorry had two packages confused by name. Opentracker is good and still provides decent coverage for a web based solution but its best to use it with a server based solution like the old version of WhosOn. Version 3.X tends to work best in my honest opinion.
