I doubt they have any of the base code remaining.

To be that large you are probably right. I remember Lanzer's posts years ago about all the changes they had made to that point and I think they were close to hitting a billion posts. But I think all of their added functionality and other things required many of the changes and not the sheer size of the data. With our 400 million posts its true we have changed alot of the base phpbb code but there is still a considerable amount that remains. Many of our changes were for functionality reasons and also for Wincache integration.

Are they genuine membership numbers?

Not for sure because of numbers,
just some changes about numeric type casting here and there (DB and files) can accomplish with those numbers.

Since ..

.. they passed the limit of an INT:%d int(%d) -2,147,483,648 to 2,147,483,648

I can say for sure they are using bigint, instead..
BINT bigint(20) -9,223,372,036,854,775,808 to 9,223,372,036,854,775,808

That's just for the functionality per se.

Instead what they did with the core base should be something that relates to their particular type of board/site/gfxs.
This has been discussed somewhere, at those times - already. Nothing a do with numbers as far as I know.

Many of Lanzer's changes were for performance reasons - at least that is what he alluded to in his posts. We found the same to be true as well

I guess I'm amazed the forum has never been pruned. Or maybe it has. I imagine the tables are partitioned into many tablespaces.

He also had implemented several aggressive caching strategies. Reading his post on phpbb2 tweaks back in the day is what led us to develop caching implementation into our board using Wincache.

For those with these large forums, what type of server setup do you guys have?
Anyone operating these insanely busy forums in shared environments?

I seriously doubt you could ran a board even a tenth as large as any of those mentioned on shared hosting.

way before you get anywhere near that large you are going to have to be running on dedicated servers and probably more than one.
