Why does phpBB include a 'Bots' group?

Post by paulie »

Just wondering! What purpose does it serve if any?

To allow control of what the bots can, or cannot, index on your board

I now no longer support any of my extensions but they will start to become available here

Have you looked up the manual before asking this?

Obviously if I had, then I wouldn't be asking the question.

I have now though, so thank you.

The bots group is no replacement for a robots.txt file if you want to block bot access. The ability to identify bots can be useful for fine tuning things, for example I have a bunch of forums I do not want indexed but are publicly available. They also have ads on them which requires Googles adsbot to index them, I set up separate group just for that bot and granted access to those forums.
“Results! Why, man, I have gotten a lot of results! I have found several thousand things that won’t work.”
