Way to easily add multiple forums with rules

Post by 20GT » Fri Aug 31, 2018 11:03 am

I'm starting a forum about a public video game multiplayer server. It will require a many categories, each named for a tribe on the server.

Inside each category will be 2 forums,
One similar to a public profile (Public read only)
One for private use of that tribe. (hidden to public but not to members of that group)

Estimated over 100 categories/tribes which is over 300 forums

Thats a lot of adding and customizing per tribe

I'm going to get a db script, to add the forums and permissions.

It's already got those tables of information inside of the database I'm just adding more of the same tables with different values.

i'm hoping to create a web form that uses a variable to add the new tribe name to the script.

hopefully run it from there or export the script to be run on MySQL Databases

I'm going to start by downloading a text copy of my entire Db add the forums and the download another copy of the Db put that info into word and compare to find out all the changes made.

I'll tell ya'll how it goes.
Any advice would be great.

If you download the dB as a SQL file that is a text file anyway. Do not use word, MS Notepad, dreamweaver or front page or anything similar they will mess up your files (find out why).

You should use a proper/good text editor such as Notepad++ which also has a compare facility.

Thanks for the info, I'll have to remember that.

But for that part it's just informational.

I'm just trying to see exactly what is added to the database, using the compare function of word to compare the two files.

Are you sure this is what you want/need?
The permission query back to the database to see if you have access to the 300 forums on the index page will be extraordinary.

The problem is that even viewing text files in Word will give you incorrect results, you need to use a plain text editor as described above.

The thing is, do you need all those forums from the get go? If not you could add them as they become required when requested by your users. With that amount of categories and forums things will slow down appreciably.

very true and thats what Im going to do but i want a way to easily add them and I don't see why a script wouldn't work.
Input the new tribe name hit submit (possibly resync) and its done

Because a forum isn't just created in one table. There interlinked so you'll need the correct permissions set too and some other stuff. It's not quite as easy as you might think. 300 forums will be extremely hard to moderate, administer and for your users to navigate. The thing to think about is, do you really need all of them right now. How many will sit empty, never to be posted in?

I imagine such a query would be complicated, I suggest you make an extension request.
