What are the "Must Have" extensions for a phpBB forum?

Post by TritonZA » Wed May 15, 2019 12:34 pm

Afternoon All,

What would you suggest or consider are the "Must Have" extensions for a phpBB forum for:

(1) safety and security;
(2) improved / ease of administration; and
(3) user interface and feel?

On reading some of the posts over the past while, I have seen some users post screenshots of their current extensions installed, and surprisingly I saw that some run to quite a few. So, this got me wondering, what are your suggestions for extensions that would be needed for a phpBB forum in the 3 categories listed above?

Thanks,

The question is subjective.

For some phpBB is fine "out of the box" and needs nothing else. For others they want "all the bells and whistles", but most fall somewhere in between.

user interface and feel?
This is more to do with style that any extension and there are plenty of choices.

As for "must have" extensions then it is really up to you as to what you feel is necessary and/or required for the type of board that you are running.

Not every extension suits every board obviously. You tend to add the ones that fit the features you want or need to add based on what your board is about and how people use it.

In the old days these topics were slightly more relevant because hard coding was needed so adding new features required more effort. Now it's all done with extensions, you upload a folder, activate and you're done so people seem to be more likely to add a lot more.

I think the media extension is a no brainer. It parses all of the media links you might need without any BBcode needed.
ELONW to open links in a new window is handy.
I think I've also got david63's banner image changer.
That's it!

Agreed about the subjectivity of my OP, but was hoping to gain some insight into other users preferences for extensions that are "successful" and could be seen as a must have. It may be easier to do this for the category 1 as security is of paramount importance in today's IT world.

And then to a lesser extent for category 2, but maybe there are some extensions that users feel strongly about that do make board administration "better"?

That is useful information and I do have all of those listed and they function very well indeed. But looking for a bit more insight possibly into users reasons for installing a particular extension?

Virtually all of my "back end" extensions were written because I wanted them so to me they are required but not necessarily by others.

Yip, it's the Site Logo one for sure, and probably the most useful extension out there from an admin and user interface perspective :D

They were useful. I don't really have a better explanation than that.

Trying to get more out of you David as to what where the reasons for you "wanting" them? Perhaps you saw a need to make something more practical or easier to do?

Sounds like Necessity is the mother of invention

To answer the OP's question, these are the 'must have' extensions that I install on my boards. Our general philosophy is to keep the list to a minimum so that updating/upgrading is kept as simply as possible, but no simpler. Almost without exception it is a requirement that extensions must be officially released before I'll consider them for a live board. On some boards I will also add Individual posts per page to give end-users more control.

One that I think would add lots of value to board members shows no sign of being officially approved and released, [RC] PM Search, which is a shame because it works well on my testing environment. IMHO it should actually be core phpBB functionality, but that's a different discussion.
