Feature questions

Post by NeedToKnow » Fri Jul 26, 2019 7:11 am

A couple questions before trying to install.

Are the support/extra pages on this site created using phpbb or something else?

https://www.phpbb.com/support/
https://www.phpbb.com/customise/
https://www.phpbb.com/extensions/
https://www.phpbb.com/styles/

It's a good feature that I could take advantage of if it exists.

This page...
https://www.phpbb.com/support/docs/en/3.2/ug/adminguide/groups_edit/
... says "There is no permission to deny the sending to groups" but it's not clear if groups can be configured so they cannot send messages at all. If not, might there be an extension to block private messages from groups? I searched but couldn't find anything.

Thank you

To prevent members in a group from sending private messages, that permission is more than likely in the Group permissions under the Permissions tab in the ACP.

As to your first question. This site is using some sort of extension that allows a breadcrumb-like interface to allow a user to navigate to other directories and subdomains of this site.

Directory ---> phpbb.com/some folder

Subdomain ---> some_domain.phpbb.com

Nope, everything outside community/ is custom written, most of it in symfony, some really old pages as custom phpbb pages.
Subdomains are not coupled at all to the main site, just use the same style.

he didn't say it wasn't a subdomain. he said the pages on the subdomain were not actually part of phpbb, just coded to look the same.

Would I be correct in assuming that symfony, out of the box, is not a content management system similar to wordpress and the like?

I vaguely recall long long ago different phpbb users developed what they called 'portals' to be used in conjunction with the core forum. At that time, I had no use for such things. And I want to be careful how I say this, but I found many of the designs somewhat cluttered if not impractical. So I left them alone. But time moves forward and I can imagine uses for things like this. Recently I heard the term 'premod' used in this connection too.

Regarding the ability to send messages, I'm unclear about what can and can't be done. I once looked at the documentation for developing extensions but at that time it was so over the top I wrote off the prospect. Maybe I'll have to revisit this idea.

Mean-time, I attempted to install the newest version of phpbb but got errors. I'll have to post about it in the appropriate spot.

Thanks all for your insights and interest.

If you go to permissions tab >> Group permissions link on left >> Select Group

You can select different roles, edit them etc. Select the private message tab for those permissions. One thing to be aware of is the permissions for the role "No private messages" has
Can read private messages
Can send private messages
set to "never". Never is never and cannot be overridden, so if you set registered users to this role since everyone is part of the registered users group no one would be able to send message even if some other group they belong to like moderators has this permissions set to yes.

Roles can be edited or created by clicking any applicable link under "permissions roles" also on the left.

Hi Coalman,

Thanks for the clarification. I think this should work out the way I have in mind. ie, newly registered members can't send or receive messages but once they become regular members all will be fine.

3Di, thanks for the link. I'll have to spend more time looking over their site.

Cheers to you both.

I believe that is the default for the NRU group. can not use private messages at all.

ACP >> Permission Tab >> Select "User Roles" link on the left >> Select the little gear next to newly Registered Users

On the private message tab you can just mark everything as never. It's one of the few places "never" may apply, I believe they are still part of the registered users group so private message permissions for that group set to yes would override no. Permissions are stacked in phpBB so belonging to any group with the permission set to "yes" overrides any set to no. Since they are automatically removed from the newly registered users group after X posts "never" will not come into play once removed from that group.

Also keep in mind the User, Admin and Moderator Roles are Global. Forum Roles are permissions for forums.

The phpBB permission set is pretty complex but once you understand it there isn't much you can't do with it.

Complex indeed. But there's a learning curve with most programs and unfamiliar territory so a bit of time is expected.

Regarding the extra/non community pages, I've tapped the templates and styles of an older forum, and they aren't hard to mimic, so who knows, maybe that will be a future project I can work on.

Thanks for the input fellers. It's all good stuff.
