Internal communications

Post by SFMJ » Fri Aug 09, 2019 1:17 pm

Hi, everyone!

I was wondering if anyone has any experience using phpBB for internal communications in a workplace?

There are so many options for doing this, and email is not the greatest for everything regarding internal communications. A few positives is the easy way to keep guidelines, memo's etc. front and center when needed, and of course the fact that this i a cheap alternative.

My concern is how much you can make it you own, if you're not the most experienced person, when it comes to coding and customizing software.

Any use cases and experiences like this is welcome! :D

I do not see any reason why you could not use phpBB in this way although to me it does not seem to be the easiest system.

One issue that may create problems is with privacy - if you used a forum for communicating then you might find that setting up, managing and controlling the relevant permissions somewhat laborious.

You could use the PM system but basically that would be no different than using email.

You have not said how many employees would be involved - this could make a difference.

Personally I would look for a product that is more tailored to communication

I used to use it for staying in touch with eighteen field service engineers. I would send their jobs to their phpBB accounts and they would write up their reports on phpBB it all worked well, not ideal but ok. It was a temporary replacement for Lotus Notes (I was so glad to see that crock go) while SAP was introduced. You know what they say about being careful what you wish for? I don’t have a good enough adjective for SAPs only ugh!!

At the end of it it depends what you want to do with phpBB.

I think phpBB is a good application for this. You just need a permission set that prevents people from seeing what they shouldn't and allows them to see what they need.

If you have complete control over the server(s) and software, YES, if not NO: this taking into account privacy and confidentiality. Most companies have specific rules regarding means of communication (also regarding content).
