Iā€™m really in the neutral camp on this, and a couple in my moderator team are really against. This is why we decided not to implement them.

But I do dislike using extensions for things that are part of a forum core experience. For those that do elect to use reactions, or if we reverse our decision one day, they quickly become second nature.

Maybe the best solution is to have it as an official extension.
But back on topic šŸ˜‰ I see a lot of activity around RC2 on github, so great to see that. Cheers to the team, will be a great start to the year if we get 3.3 gold.

What do you mean?
We are already fixing issues with compact() and PHP 7.3/7.4 related.
Feel free to post in the tracker the issues you may find.
Thanks.
Yes, I found a first solution here: viewtopic.php?p=15381596#p15381426

Thanks for the hint for a repeated search. :)

I'd like to remind everyone that this topic is about discussion the release of 3.3.0-RC1. Please be respectful to others in this community.
Paradoxically a post that deserves a core based 'like'. Stereotyping (inaccurately) people because of their views is unhelpful here and in their moderator capacity. I've hosted many phpBB forums for over 15 years and don't do social media but if I was starting a new forum would probably go Discourse. However, swapping large existing forums to Discourse would be too much of a challenge.

Which is why 3.3 is so important to me and php7.3 support trumps any user function enhancements so great to see development focused on that. I have kept a Jessie server running because Buster won't support 3.2 without the additional repositories which I don't really want to add to my new production servers. Hence progress looks really good and my worries about it not being out on before Jessie's June EOL are disappearing fast with the rapid Beta 1, 2 & RC-1 releases which I have been watching over in Area 51. Are we likely to see a RC-2 or go straight for gold as it appears to be going well?

Hi guys, I've installed this to test out before updating my live forum and I've a little and simple doubt. How can I disabled the Emojis from being used on forum or subject titles by registered users and/or guests? I wasnt able to find any option for that.
I love that new capability! But I can't have it available for guests at all, and I beleive most of the admins have the same opinion, its the same as the icons, we don't want any user to be able to choose the topic icon. And I was thinking to only have that for my staff, but not my normal members.

If its not possible then I guess I'll wait for 3.2.9 instead since it should be more stable then this one since it seems to be an EOL release.

But you can use Emoji in 3.2.8 und 3.2.9 as well within the posts and you cannot disable this. Why is this now a problem? šŸ¤”

I don't get want you mean. I don't know, if 3.2.9 will be the last 3.2.x release, but it's content and bugfixes are in 3.3.0 as well.

Dunno, I'm using 3.2.5 right now. I am testing this 3.3.0 since I am thinking to update my forum very soon, dunno if to 3.2.8, 3.2.9 or 3.3.0.
But I wouldnt be able to update to 3.3.0 because of that "bug" or let say missing feature.
I read above that 3.2.9 could be the last EOL, so, Im not saying anything, only stating what was said.

Emoji support came together with phpBB 3.2.0. So how do you solve this "problem" at the moment in your board?

In my forum I am not able to insert emojis on topic titles. It gives an error "Your subject contains the following unsupported characters:"

If you talk about posts itself, my emojis are being converted to similies by an extension that I paid to a developer to do it for me. That way I control with the disable smilies feature.

But having emojis on the post area is not what makes me afraid. The big problem for me is the topic titles. Like the topic icons. Only admin/mods and people on staff group should be able to add emojis. Since phpbb have permissions to topic icons, it could have too for emojis. because normal users shouldnt be able to use emojis on topic titles.

About forum, since only admins have access we dont need that permission or option. But on topic titles, where any group have access, would be great to have control about it. I thought this would make sense for anyone, maybe im the weirdo

[3.2.x] Update version numbers to 3.2.10-dev
        build/build.xml (version 790e77de019099b977593fa7f78ac82b3bda7365)
        phpBB/includes/constants.php (version 790e77de019099b977593fa7f78ac82b3bda7365)
        phpBB/install/schemas/schema_data.sql (version 790e77de019099b977593fa7f78ac82b3bda7365)
3.2.10 hasn't been excluded yet. As happened with the 3.1 series, the 3.2 series won't be dropped just like that and security updates and possibly some obscure and hitherto undiscovered inconsistencies (or whatever) may require a minor version update.

3.2.0 was released on Jan 7, 2017. 3.1.7 PL1 was released on Jan 11, 2017
3.1.11 was released the same day as 3.2.1 (Jul 16 2017), and 3.1.12 was released the same day as 3.2.2 (Jan 7, 2018).
Support for 3.1 ended on July 1, 2018.

I have a pull request which was just added to the 3.2.10 milestone on GitHub so there will be at least 1 further version of 3.2.x.

Thanks team. A data point to report.

Using the instructions Knowledge Base - Updating 3.2.x I've done a localhost test (CentOS Linux release 7.7.1908 (Core) with PHP 7.2.26 from Remi's RPM repository) of updating a phpBB 3.2.8 board to phpBB 3.3.0-RC1.

I used [3.2][RC] Extension .yml check to flag any incompatible extensions and resolve the issues.

Overall it took about 5 minutes to complete successfully and my sanity testing shows everything seems to be functioning as expected.

After sanity testing, I changed to the PHP 7.3 repository, verified that ACP->General showed PHP version 7.3.13 and repeated my sanity testing. All appears OK.

Because of other packages installed on my localhost environment I'm not able to test compatibility with PHP 7.4.x at this time.

Thank you, this is quite reassuring as my biggest worry is whether my extensions will all be compatible with this upgrade when it's released.

Could someone with more knowledge on here explain why an extension could become incompatible after upgrading from 3.2.8 to 3.3?

Thanks!

Not all extensions are for example compitable with php7, and some use deprecated features from symfony which are removed in the new symfony version phpBB 3.3 uses. A lot extensions should be compitable. Best is to just try it, and if you notice any issues post in the support area for the specific extension.

One of the reasons would be the change in coding guidelines (hence the yml check (by david63 IIRC), which test the validity of certain syntax. If it passes it doesn't yet imply that the extension is 3.3 compatible, however if it doesn't pass the test then it's certainly not compatible.

I'd like to help test and develop phpBB. What's the best way to get involved and contribute code?
