Most of the significant changes are in the back-end, which will pave for the way for future improvements.
Invisible reCaptcha is nice though. There's also a nice new ajax search in 'find a member' that returns a list of usernames matching your partial search:

That has been clear for a long time already, but still, the transition from 2.0 to 3.0 was massive as was the transition from 3.0 to 3.1 (in my case to 3.2).
With that in mind, 3.3 doesn't have a real wow factor. (and yes I know, no wow factor was promised nor insinuated but one can't help hoping for something really spectacular).
Don't take this as negative criticism, it's a natural emotion for those who haven't seriously looked under the hood yet (and I'm one of them). I'm realistic enough to appreciate the not-so-apparent improvements.
Spelling is freeware, which means you can use it for free.
On the other hand, it is not open source, which means you cannot change it or publish it in a modified form.
Time flies like an arrow, but fruit flies like a banana.
Great news
While as mentioned it is not a "Wow" update, it is solid one refreshing the core of the software. Now to hoping that 4.0 with all the cool new features arrive sooner rather than later* It seems like a mighty rewrite of the code, converting all the control panels, getting a modern template, adding ACP installation/updating of extensions, user mentions, improving the drafts feature, adding storage options and probably more stuff I'm missing.

I don't think that is a new 3.3 feature, it exists in phpBB 3.2.8. I cannot recall when it got introduced.
Normal people… believe that if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Engineers believe that if it ain’t broke, it doesn’t have enough features yet. – Scott Adams

The fixes for the configuration of Sphinx search are made to the sphinx.conf configuration file generated by the ACP and the sample file shipped in the docs folder. While in operation, this file actually resides outside of phpBB. So, for those who have already configured Sphinx as the search backend, you will need to apply the configuration changes manually to your existing sphinx.conf file (by checking against the new configuration file supplied by phpBB 3.3). The changes will then take effect upon the next full indexation of your main search index (whenever you have indexer.exe scheduled to run, usually daily).
EDIT: For example, I can see that on this board the configuration has not been updated, as HTML markup is still part of the search index eg a search for "br" brings up 2.5 million results due to <br> tags being treated as a keyword in every post.

Likes... tha wee new logo there and tha wee new logo in the acp,
Love... nae more having t change tha folder permissions when installing.
Tha only thing I think shoods be changed at some point in tha future is on tha opening page after install, tha wee box tae "enable VigLink" - if ya do tick it - it's enabled, if ya do nae tick it - it's still enabled.
It's been like it fur a while so it's nae big deal, just a bit confusing for those new to tha phpBB forum softwares, so maybe tha wee box could be removed and a wee line of text like "tae disable VigLink go tae extensions" could be added.
