Hopefully this is the correct place in the forum.

I found a video that explains how to install phpBB forum. The problem is you need domain name and hosting company. I just want to create a prototype forum and upload it the internet at a later time. Anyway I can do this using phpBB?

The article is outdated, the current version of XAMPP will work with Vista and any newer version according to their documentation. If you needed compatibility for older version of windows you could download older version from their archives.

https://www.apachefriends.org/download.html

phpBB works with PHP 7,4 so XAMMP that uses PHP 7.4.7 probably your best bet.

Apache by defualt in XAAMP runs on port 8056. In XAAMP, click on config in the apache row, and edit the httpd-xaamp.conf and change to a new port, like 8057. You'll have to restart apache for it to take affect, and if http://localhost/ doesn't load after this, try http://localhost:8057/ (or whatever port number you chose).

While we try and be helpful with issues like this you are better off seeking support of information from XAMPP's site.

I managed to get it working by going to the website recommended. I didn't have administration privilege on. Now I have a new question. I can't find the Privileges button. Can someone help?

if you are asking about some type of privileges setting for your server software then you need to ask at the site that is about server software. if you are talking about some type of prvileges setting for phpbb please be more specific.

Click on the on the link and ctr f "On the top menu, click the Privileges button." Remove the quotes though. That will explain what I am talking about.

ok, that is in phpmyadmn.

are you saying you do not see the privileges tab at the top of the phpmyadmin page?

have you created a database yet with a username and password?

if not, you don't see that privileges tab.
if so, then you should see it.
if you open that tab
you should see a page with all of the database users you have.
there should be a link beside each username that says "check privileges"
click on that and you will be able to give your new user all privileges.

I'm working on updating that article. The "privileges" tab is now labeled "User accounts" This is updated.

On the top menu, click the User Accounts tab.

Click Add a new User halfway down the page on the left

Enter a username, for "Host name" leave as default "Any host" and last enter a password.

Create a database with same name as the username you have entered by checking the appropriate box. Further down next to Global privileges, select "Check All." At the very bottom, click the Go button. You should be presented with a confirmation screen that you successfully created a new user.
You should only need to install phpBB at that point.
