Need advice - Canonical meta tag points to a different url

Post by Keeno »

I'm having a few issues with my sitemap and the way its reading my forum. The issue is the site map is reading around 9,000 pages but another 9,000+ are not being read because of the following:

Canonical meta tag points to a different url

From what I can find out by reading i believe this is because its interpretation pages as duplicates. Ive been through a lot of the links and they are not duplicates. Most are pages in topics. For such a large number of pages to be coming back as duplicate or not being submitted to my siremap there must be a issue somewhere?

PHP version: 7.3.23
Board version: 3.3.0

Thank you for any advice in advance.

You should post the whole message, or even a screenshot, because that's not enough information.

It could be just an issue with about the URL scheme (http:// / https://), the domain (with or without www.) or even the extension, but with that little information is hard to say.

Thank you for the reply Abaddon,

I've attached 3 screenshot of the detailed report from hhe sitemap.

I understand this isn't a phpbb sitemap. Im wondering if this is a known issue with phpbb links or if there's a issue. A lot of the links bding skipped are full of useful info which is why im a little worried over half of the available pages are being skipped.

Have you spoken to the author/owners of the sitemap?

Yes, they referred me to a Google a Google article - https://support.google.com/webmasters/a ... 9066?hl=en

If it was 10% of the pages I could sort if understand it. But over 50% not being submitted is a lot.

I understand phpbb links work fine on Google without the human friendly canonical tags. Its got me a little concerned that we are only submitting under half our site in a sitemap though.

None of the skipped links for the above reason are apps/extension pages either which makes it more baffling why so many are skipped.

Again I want to reiterate that I'm just after any friendly advice from anyone who knows this type of thing and what could be causing it. Im not sure if its a phpbb issue, if its the sitemap and the way it reads phpbb, if its some Google type issue with the way it reads phpbb.

I've just hear back from someone from the sitemap. Its above my knowledge but ill post the reply as it may help someone and help with this topic.

for instance, the first page listed in the report is:
"https://www.growroom420.com/viewtopic.p ... 7&p=173684
(the link refers to a forum page using a specific post ID), and in the html code it has a canonical tag pointing to another URL:
<link rel="canonical" href="https://www.growroom420.com/viewtopic.p ... ;start=140">
it means that https://www.growroom420.com/viewtopic.p ... &start=140 should be indexed and included in sitemap instead of https://www.growroom420.com/viewtopic.p ... 7&p=173684"

The issue for me with this is that they are both pages in the same topic and both will have content i want indexed. I cant see by looking at hhe links why they are being seen as duplicate or anything else. To me both are different?

The whole purpose of having a canonical URL is to take a page that can be reached by more than one URL and group it all under the same canonical URL. That way your search engine doesn't try to index duplicate content. Therefore, the whole purpose of having a canonical URL is for it to be different than the browsed-to url. If it were always the same, it would have no purpose.

Thank you Brf,

I've realised my confusion. I've just done the maths and we have 170,000 posts, devided by 20 posts per page, rounds off to about 8,000 pages which is around what is being indexed. So theres no issue.

It was the fact the site map had shown a total of 20,000 pages crawled. Which would include the canonical pages.

Hopefully this will help anyone else who comes across similar and gets confused.
