It's more and more like vBulletin.
The reason for me using phpBB is that is not suposed to be like vBulletin.
Can you elaborate on that with examples please ???

There are only a few styles for 3.3. Probably most of the people just use prosilver.
You have a weird definition of the word few

New version of phpBB has been released? My styles aren't validated for it yet? Check my page for the latest downloads!
I do not need all that s... s... stuff! Just give me the option to be notified when a new reply is posted in a thread I am following. It's enogh!
Also, the User Control Panel is hidden in the nickname, with the "log out" menu. I do not like that.
Another thing is the BB codes menu. Just not my style!

LATER EDIT: Also, the contact drop-down menu.
Subscribe to a topic and there you have your notifications. All the other options s you don't want: deselect those (a one time action if you really don't want those).
What's stopping you from copying/moving the UCP link to wherever you want?
There are the default phpBB codes, or you can use ABBCCode box, CKeditor, or RinEditor.

Probably most of the people use their browser with just about the default configuration.
phpBB gives you (and any current or potential users) options.
Spelling is freeware, which means you can use it for free.
On the other hand, it is not open source, which means you cannot change it or publish it in a modified form.

I really hope phpbb4 isn't a drastic change and stays the same as it is now with only security/bug improvements to the codebase.
Was an avid user of IPS like a decade ago until they released their completely new version IPS4 and it was just bad. Not the IPB I liked. I haven't used it again, I don't consider it even an option anymore. Losing me who was a user from 2005 till 2015, that's how bad and drastic the change was, it became bloated completely different board.
This is what I love about phpbb, it is same and the changes aren't noticeable except obviously in the background. I really hope phpbb4 is the same and not a drastic change in looks or codebase. I know there is pressure from users but think about this. The only reason people use phpbb and not the plethora of other boards is because they like phpbb how it is!. I have owned other boards and I still prefer phpbb.
I don't think there is even need for phpbb4 to be honest. Just keep developing the current branch, it is the best. There is no bloat, you can use other themes if you like from third parties and use extensions to add features you want.

Compare the amount of files and their sizes of a 3.0 installation to those of a 3.1 or younger installation: Symfony, Composer and Twig was added upon which phpBB became dependent. An 3.3.4 installation has doubled the amount of files since then.
