Cookie concern

Post by VioletEvergarden »

Hi,
I’m not tech savvy so go easy with any replies please. I recently signed up to a forum that uses phpBB. It has been brought to my attention that some of the creators and administrators of this new forum are misusing users data. I really want to delete ALL cookies associated with this forum (when I delete all cookies from my phone, I never get asked about consent when revisiting this particular forum, unlike other community forums). Please could you suggest a solution … I’m using chrome on an iPhone. Tia

Thanks janus. I’ve done that lots of time but I’m wondering why the website does not ask me for any consent when I open the home page. If all cookies are cleared should I not have to give consent again?

PhpBB does not use "tracking" cookies, only those needed to maintain the login session.
It is up to each individual website whether they seek consent for cookies.

Thanks Brf. It’s great to get such quick replies. Do you think it’s unusual that consent is not re requested when I clear all the cookies as outlined above? What should I do next as I’m concerned about privacy?

I am not sure what your question is.
PhpBB does not ask for consent for cookies unless the board owner has installed some sort of addon to ask for consent.

There is a standard phpBB Privacy policy that covers cookies. It is visible in the footer by default on most phpBB boards and styles. Strange but there doesn't appear to be footer here on phpBB.com.

How would I check for an ad on which the owner may have installed? (The forum’s layout is very similar to phpBB which it acknowledges and there is an option to delete all cookies which I always do but, I have never had to consent again)

What are you trying to accomplish? If you wish to block cookies, that is a function in your webbrowser.
If you block the session cookies, phpBB puts the session number in your webbrowser's addressbar.

The website are (allegedly) tracking users and sharing information with other websites. I just want to ensure my data (email address, ip address, etc.) is protected

PhpBB only uses session cookies, which are used to maintain your login. There is nothing in phpBB's cookies that could be shared with other websites. Any website already knows your ip address, otherwise you would not be able to visit them.

Thanks Brf. I’m aware of them knowing my ip address but I’d like to delete all cookies such that consent would need to be given if I visit website

You would need to talk to the website's owner then, or block the cookies, or don't visit that website.

If you believe that your personal data is being misused and you are covered by GDPR then report the site to the appropriate authorities
