Security issue on PHPBB ?

Post by wollastoni »

When I announced to my members that I will switch from a Proboards forum to a phpbb forum, I received this message from a developer :

"I would also recommend you guys swap from phpbb to mybb if you guys host your own forum. PHPbb's last update was in 2015, so there is no more support for security related stuff. Mybb is faster, easier to manage, more secure, and has a lot of options for plugins related to spam and user control."

Is there a part of truth in there ? What are the pros and cons of phpbb vs mybb.
I will stick to phpbb because I have spent a lot of days working on a phpbb version of my forum, but I would like to understand the pros and cons vs mybb. Thank you all

Are you serious about being on this forum and reacting to the last update?
I don't know myBB

Tell him that was phpBB 3.1.7 and that the latest version is 3.3.7 and was released on 17/03/2022.

Sounds to me as if he is mybb biased.

From my experience (I installed a MyBB board last year for a client) all I can say is there are more holes in MyBB for spammers than in my mothers colander. I didn’t stick with it long enough to find out about security issues.

I already answered that to him. My question was more about his other points.
My point is to understand his other points, not the last update timing.

Some of those are very subjective. What's easier or faster for one person isn't for another.
There are hundreds of extensions in the database on this site. Several of which are for spam and user control.

To have an informed opinion you need to know both, I don't know myBB.
The opinion given by one of your members is obviously biased, we should know if it is really objective.

That's why I was expecting the pov of someone who have tried both... of course, someone who hasn't a clue about mybb or phpbb should not answer here.

Thank you Mick for your answer.

As already noted this is wrong, if someone can get something that is fundamental so badly wrong what does that tell you about the rest of their opinions?
Mybb is faster,

You would need to do some benchmarking on same server with similar sized forum and setup but from one average sized forum using php8.1, Opcache+Jit, memcached and the server under low load I'm getting times reported by the browser as low as 0.05s which is crazy fast. Anything in the sub 0.2s range would be considered fast by Google.
easier to manage,

I have no idea but I'm guessing neither does the person that offered this opinion.
more secure,
Overall going back 15 years to 2007 with the original release of 3.0 phpBB's security record has been outstanding. I'm going to guess that record is not matched by Mybb.Taking a quick look at some CVE lists that statement is simply not true.

Hello, a software comparison (of different systems) is usually subject to individual assessments and experiences. From my point of view, information, highlights and much more can be read in the announcements.
