well from what I have seen so far and my testing, I think phpBB3 has a lot of promise, yes the permission system does take a lot of getting use to, but the permission trace feature as well as the permission borrow feature (user profile view) makes working out what users can / can't see a lot easier, I think the ACP is very good, I also like the user CP, PM history great feature, all in all this is one fantastic board, well done to the dev team

Wow it's got so many functions. I love the permissions and it is so much better than ppbb 2x. The report feature is exactly what i have been looking for, but instead of installing several mods for it, i think ill wait for the release whenever it is. Great work!

It's great and I can't believe the fact that phpbb is free! :D

However, like it has been said before, the permissions system is more extensive and more complicated than 2.x and admins will need some practice to get it working just the way they want.

I'm hoping for a definitive user guide catering to administration and especially permissions settings.

This is a thing where every administrator could contribute - writing such a "Howto" as no Php experience required :-)

But for that the writers would need to be familiar with phpbb3's inner workings.

PHPBB3 is great - I'm very impressed and can't wait to use it as my primary LIVE board.

Opinion one: during the installation you should be asked to setup "preset" privledge setups. It took me 10 minutes to get my head around the privs and it would be a good idea to set them up defaultly at the beginning - let people modify later.

Opinion two: New topic bloat - Attachment uploading and Poll creation shouldn't be completely visable by default.. simply create a open/close CSS
click on Poll creation and the area pops open.

Opinion Three: on ACP Manage Forums. subdomains should be visable on the index page - shouldn't require you to click on the catagory..

Apart from that - I like it alot

So far, I've been very pleased. One thing that I'm VERY happy about is the implementation of sub-forums. The admin panel looks a lot nicer too, and the installation process is a cinch. We're not supposed to talk about mods yet on beta :-D, but seriously it looks like this code will make it even easier to build and implement mods!

Great job, development team!

Yep, mods should be a lot easier to install. For a lot of the better ones that will come out, you won't have to do all of the tiny annoying changes, it will be more files that you have to upload and a few include statments added in. :D

The template include statment makes things so much easier. 8)

Im no longer a user of PHPBB but I'm glad to see that your entering beta stages with this. It's been a long time coming. A little too long in my oppinion. I look forward to trying it out.

Well done Devs!

I'm not really a phpBB fan nor use it, but I like to take a look at different bulletin boards, since its me whos going up against you, because I'm the president of Neo Power Solutions and developed NeoBB which will be soon to be released.

I'm got to hand it to the development team, they have done major improvements when I last saw phpBB in action. That was the first release of phpBB2. I'm not going lie to you guys, even if phpBB3 goes final, there still be loads of sercuirty issues and explots in phpBB, like in the other versions.

Main dissapointment is, I think you ripped off the admin cp, due to the fact it looks like Matt Mecham's ideal admin cp for Invision Power Board. Only difference is, you only used CSS through out the admin.

I'm going to wait for final release, and go through your code to see how many security issues and exploits I can find, with in a couple of hours.

In my overall rate. I give phpBB beta 1 5 out of 10.

I do not think our designer agree to this. ;) Actually, we never had a deep look to the ibp admin panel, i for one only saw a screenshot once a few years back.

Would be nice if you would report them too... maybe we should do the same and give NeoBB a tiny internal audit... more eyes see more.

The admin panel for phpBB3 was in development before IPB's tabbed admin panel was released. Just because they released it first, doesn't mean it's their idea. Tabbed websites have been around for years. Does IPB claim these other sites that use tabbed pages also ripped off Matt Macham?
