How well did it hold up with 8,000+ users?

Post by BondGamer » Mon Mar 19, 2007 4:16 am

I am curious how well the forum held up with all the activity today. The record on Area51 is only 1,320 users.
My phpBB3 Mods: - None active =[

Seemed fairly responsive during that period to me. Remember area51 is on a different server which was never intended to handle this sort of load. At least that is what has been said in the past by staff.

The servers were more or less idling. ;) The server that runs Apache is a Dual 2.4GHz NetBurst Xeon, where whilst there was the odd load spike, it stayed responsive and kept serving pages with load average hovering around 2 to 4.

The DB server is a Dual AMD Opteron which OSUOSL hosts and is shared a number of other projects that they host, though apparently the load average barely crept over 1 since phpBB.com came back online and subsequently got Dugg.

Will have to see what happens come RC1... will it make past 25,000 without breaking into a sweat? ;)

Seems pretty good for the most part.
I only noticed one glitch when the server reached 3,200 which concerned me a bit, however, it did not appear to be a phpBB3 issue from what I could tell... more of a load problem.
Though a RAID should have no trouble handling at least 20,000 users online at the same time, so I don’t know why it had that glitch. :?

EDIT: Ah, gotta LOVE POST REVIEW!! haha!
Actually, I’m surprised at the Hardware, I would think phpBB would need/choose something with a bit more power. :? ;)

with 2 dual cpu servers behind the site I'm really not surprised that it help up so well :)

however I have see 2.0.x cripple a server with much fewer users... and vBulletin for that matter.

nice to see that phpbb3 is obviously much faster than 2.0.x :)

It shows around 3.5k to 4k online, but that's over an hour. Meaning there are undoubtedly sessions entries still in the database that no one's using.
