Why is phpBB 2.0 telling me it's the latest?

Post by abrogard » Sun Sep 09, 2007 11:43 am

What is this phpBB 3.0 ?

I've got 2.0.x and it tells me there's no update for my installation... I've got the latest.

But there's a few hassles with it and many mods written for it because of that.

Is 3 some sort of improvement which includes all these mods?

Is it available to all and sundry?

should I get it?

regards,

ab :)

phpBB3 is the next version up. You're using it right now! It has a lot of new features not present in standard phpBB2.

Your admin panel says you're up to date because your phpBB2 version is just that.

phpBB3 is a new package entirely. It's currently at the RC5 stage. You can use it on a live environment but you should be aware that you might have to make updates before it goes gold and you might find the odd bug in it. It also includes a converter which will move your users and posts but not your MODs (except the attachment and birthday MODs) or templates.

I don't think phpBB 2.0.x will see phpBB 3.0.0 as an update, even on final. Does anybody know for sure?

Once phpBB3 goes gold, it probably will. ;)

I'd suggest upgrading soon. :)

I doubt it. phpbb2 and phpbb3 are different products

yeah i guess thats true.

Well in that case, i'd suggest upgrading from phpBB2 to phpBB3 RC5 til it hits gold.

phpBB2 will not show phpBB3 as an update, because it is not an update. I can say this quite certainly because the code in phpBB2 that checks for new versions only looks at the second and third integer.

Whether you convert to phpBB3 now is completely up to you. Look at the functionality and see if it is something that you want to do right now. There will always be a 2.0.x to 3.0.x convertor so there is no reason to rush into it. You will, of course, loose all MODs and styles since phpBB3 uses completely different code.
