I just want to take this opportunity and thank the phpbb group for all their phenomenal and incredible work, both phpbb2 and phpbb3 wise. You are all really great!
Sadly I have made so many manual changes to my phpbb2 board that upgrading is not an option for me at the current moment. However, I completely respect the phpbb group's decision to prioritize their new version, and I'm greateful for having had the possibility to merely use phpbb2 for so many years in the first place. It has really been a blast!
I do however have two concerns about phpbb2's retirement and what it means for me.
Although I completely respect the phpbb group's decision to stop supporting phpbb2, I am very worried about the lack of future security patches for the old phpbb2. I have to admit that I was secretly hoping that they would continue to give out those for at least some time, even if they stopped giving out support.
Does anyone know if there are any groups of volunteers that will provide unofficial security modifications for phpbb2 in the future, at least for those very serious security issues that might arrise?
At last, I'm very sad to see the entire phpbb2 section of the phpbb forum go. Although it's set to read-only and no future support will be given, I find those boards to be extremely useful, and I continue to use the almost limitless amount of knowledge stored in those boards on a very frequent basis. I just think it's extremely sad to see those boards and all its knowledge, facts and information go, and although I can see how keeping them would not go well with the phpbb group's decision to move away from phpbb2, I hope that it would be possible to find a different position for them on the phpbb site, rather than just deleting all those boards. Perhaps they could be hidden somewhere else on the phpbb site, or even placed on a different site althoughter? At the very least I wish I could have a copy of the data from those boards, because I know that I will miss them deeply once they are gone, no matter how well phpbb3 will be doing.
Those are my two main concernes about phpbb2's retirement.
Again, I'm extremely greateful for all that the phpbb team and phpbb community has done for phpbb2 in the past, and I hope that someday I will be able to join you with phpbb3 in the future
