"Warnings" to "Alerts"

Post by profKroy » Mon May 13, 2019 4:53 am

Hi All, I use PhpBB to teach college kids....for some context to my question.

Anyway, trying to be positive and encouraging towards students as opposed to negatively firm, I would like to change all the instances of the word "Warnings" to "Alerts" or some other softer language. "Warnings" is so firm and authoritarian. You get the idea.

Can someone advise what might be the best approach on making this semantic modification? As long as the users, see "Alerts" that ultimately would fine. Thanks all.

using ftp , download the file language/en/common.php

around line #879, find this line:
'WARNINGS' => 'Warnings',

change the word Warnings on the right side.
be very precise, do not remove the ' on each side of the word, do not remove anything just replace Warnings with Alerts.

you will notice another line there with the phrase "warn_user" you might want to edit that one as well.

save the file and upload back to the server.

by the way only use a good text editor like notepad++ or editpad lite.
do NOT use word, or notepad or any type of webpage editor. they will corrupt the file and break your board.

luck,
robert

Too easy. Much appreciated. Another mod enhancing phpBB as a valuable teaching tool.

Yes, hence the need for an extension?

Also, what about the PM notification that goes through to users. The subject is "Board Warning Issued." Where does that text live?

in language/en/mcp.php there are alot of places where the warning text is
also in language/en/ucp.php are a couple as well.
open them in a good text editor and use the search function to find the word warning.

Adding that language line in my ext overrights the standard language string. So it wont dissapear when updating phpBB.

Got it. A layer of configurability on this level would upon up more possibilities to cater to different audiences certainly. I'll give the boardmagic extension a look. Sounds like it might do the trick and let me forget about problems with updates overwriting these modifications. Thanks for that.
