adding a new feed on the forum index page

Post by TheButcher2 » Sun Sep 29, 2019 5:03 pm

I've been asked by quite a few of my regular members if I could add a news feed on the index page of the board.

How would you do that?

Peace

Thanks for the reply but I'm trying to add a news feed form CNN in the nav bar. I found this code, , pasted it but doesn't show up, so I removed it.

Any help would be appreciated.

Code: Select all

<br><DIV ID="TICKER" STYLE="overflow:hidden; width:520px; color: #000;">
  <? include "http://rss.cnn.com/rss/cnn_topstories.rss" ?>
</DIV>
<script type="text/javascript" src="webticker_lib.js" language="javascript"></script>
	<br>

I think this is the bit of code that needs to work to be honest,

Code: Select all

  <? include "http://rss.cnn.com/rss/cnn_topstories.rss" ?>

you can't add php to the html files in phpbb without at least turning it on in the admin panel security settings ( I believe that is where it is )
it is not a good idea.

why not use the built in atom feeds as linked to above.

Okay point taken Robert but I can not see anywhere on "ACP, General tab, Board configuration, Feed settings"

to add http://rss.cnn.com/rss/cnn_topstories.rss and

what code do I add to my navbar template to show the CNN news ticker.

I'm trying to show the CNN headlines from that feed on my board not show my board posts on other sites.

Peace

You want a newsfeed in the navbar?
There is no room in it, please describe better what you want.

I used feed2js for a BBC feed for many years and it’s very customisable.

I can out it under the rotating advertising text , where it shows datspush in the screen capture, I have heavily modified the prosilver theme to my liking.

But what is the code to put on there not just the rss feed, for example to rotate the cnn or bbc news ticker please.

Support is not the place to be asking coding questions, I can move this to custom coding if you wish to carry on.

Maybe I'll rephrase the question see if this gets the answer.

Does anyone have a news feed scrolling across their forum, and if so what is the code you are using on the site.

I am sure some phpbb forums have this implemented already

If you re-read my post viewtopic.php?f=641&t=2524531&p=15339666#p15338756

Basically the site mentioned will generate the code for whatever feed you want to use, the following is for the BBC World Service:

Code: Select all

<script language="JavaScript" src="http://feed2js.org//feed2js.php?src=http%3A%2F%2Ffeeds.bbci.co.uk%2Fnews%2Fworld%2Frss.xml&chan=y&desc=1&utf=y"  charset="UTF-8" type="text/javascript"></script>

<noscript>
<a href="http://feed2js.org//feed2js.php?src=http%3A%2F%2Ffeeds.bbci.co.uk%2Fnews%2Fworld%2Frss.xml&chan=y&desc=1&utf=y&html=y">View RSS feed</a>
</noscript>
There is a facility to check your feed to see how it will look and you can customise the display how you like. All you have to do then is decide where you want it and copy and paste the generated code. It’s as simple as that.

Hi Mick

I tried that the other day and just now, copied pasted it on the footer template, cleared the board cache, nothing showed up.

Thanks

Code: Select all

<script language="JavaScript" src="http://feed2js.org//feed2js.php?src=http%3A%2F%2Ffeeds.bbci.co.uk%2Fnews%2Fworld%2Frss.xml&chan=y&desc=1&utf=y"  charset="UTF-8" type="text/javascript"></script>

<noscript>
<a href="http://feed2js.org//feed2js.php?src=http%3A%2F%2Ffeeds.bbci.co.uk%2Fnews%2Fworld%2Frss.xml&chan=y&desc=1&utf=y&html=y">View RSS feed</a>
