Thank you for the clarification of the difference between conversion and upgrade. Upgrading to 3.0.14 went very well. Still waiting on the upgrade to 3.1.12 to finish - it's been going for 5 hours.

The upgrade to 3.0.14 went good.

The upgrade to 3.1.12 not so good.

The upgrade took a very long time starting on Wednesday at 3 pm EST and it was still upgrading at midnight. When I checked it this morning, it looked dead, the "Continue" button made no change so I refreshed the page and received this error "Gateway Timeout The gateway did not receive a timely response from the upstream server or application. Apache/2.4.18 (Ubuntu) Server at www.web-consulting-services.com Port 80"

It looks like it partially upgraded, the forums are there but all the topics have "0's" in that column. When I select a forum link on the Board Index I get this error "General Error SQL ERROR [ mysqli ] Unknown column 't.topic_visibility' in 'where clause' [1054]
An SQL error occurred while fetching this page. Please contact the Board Administrator if this problem persists.

And last I can't log-in.

Is it normal for the upgrade from 3.0.14 to 3.1.12 to take over 9 hours? Is there something that I need to ask my shared hosting provider?

Try to go to 3.1.0 first , 9 hours isn't normal.

Did you delete the search index?

Yeah it's a problem with such a large database.
You could try using CLI with the partially upgraded database, or restart with the database 3.0.14 backup
9 hours is long but IIRC your database = 10 GB and if your database server isn't the fastest these things happen.

Did you by any chance notice at which migration it halted?

If it can't update online you might have to do it on personal webserver and then upload the upgraded database.
We should embrace problems, without which there wouldn't be any solutions.

I emptied 3 search tables - is that the same as the search index?

I take it you meant truncated (= emptied).

But even if you deleted the search* tables, it is no big deal to replace them. This SQL will do it:

Code: Select all

CREATE TABLE `phpbb_search_results` (
  `search_key` varchar(32) COLLATE utf8_bin NOT NULL DEFAULT '',
  `search_time` int(11) UNSIGNED NOT NULL DEFAULT 0,
  `search_keywords` mediumtext COLLATE utf8_bin NOT NULL,
  `search_authors` mediumtext COLLATE utf8_bin NOT NULL
) ENGINE=InnoDB DEFAULT CHARSET=utf8 COLLATE=utf8_bin;

-- --------------------------------------------------------

--
-- Table structure for table `phpbb_search_wordlist`
--

CREATE TABLE `phpbb_search_wordlist` (
  `word_id` int(10) UNSIGNED NOT NULL,
  `word_text` varchar(255) COLLATE utf8_bin NOT NULL DEFAULT '',
  `word_common` tinyint(1) UNSIGNED NOT NULL DEFAULT 0,
  `word_count` mediumint(8) UNSIGNED NOT NULL DEFAULT 0
) ENGINE=InnoDB DEFAULT CHARSET=utf8 COLLATE=utf8_bin;

-- --------------------------------------------------------

--
-- Table structure for table `phpbb_search_wordmatch`
--

CREATE TABLE `phpbb_search_wordmatch` (
  `post_id` int(10) UNSIGNED NOT NULL DEFAULT 0,
  `word_id` int(10) UNSIGNED NOT NULL DEFAULT 0,
  `title_match` tinyint(1) UNSIGNED NOT NULL DEFAULT 0
) ENGINE=InnoDB DEFAULT CHARSET=utf8 COLLATE=utf8_bin;

OK, that settles it. :evil:
Forget about upgrading using the update interface.

I just finished upgrading a board this week, from 3.012 to 3.2.8 (and it took me almost 3 months- not constantly working on it of course).
It was heavily modified so most of the time spent was cleaning the 3.0 database, but I had to keep data from 2 mods to integrate into extensions.
The database was 1 GB and the upgrade to 3.1.12 went relatively smooth, but 3.1.12 to 3.2.8 was a PITA.
Using the upgrade UI it times out at 43%, every single time, even with increasing max execution time to 3000 seconds. in all my attempts these last weeks refreshing did finally get it to the end, but there were always errors which I only noticed when the upgrade was finished. I the end decided to use CLI and that worked but it takes about an hour.
So I was wrong about the 3.0 to 3.1 taking longer than 3.1 to 3.2.
Anyway, this evening tested on an old 3.1 board with 3GB database using CLI.
The upgrade needed more than 2 hours. :shock:

So with your 10GB database I wouldn't even try the GUI anymore but go straight for CLI.
Based on my experiences the 3.0.14 to 3.1.12 will probably need substantially more than 2 hours and for the 3.1.12 to 3.3 my educated guess would be 5 hours or more.

I definitely recommend doing this on personal webserver and NOT on your online host.

Thanks for checking in. Asked the hosting company to change some of the php settings and If that does not improve the install speed, then I'll definitely try your recommendation.

I mentioned that on March 18 already

Empty the search tables. These can be repopulated once your board is fully upgraded.
