Upgrading from a VERY old forum !

Post by raam »

Hello all ! I have been doing a lot of reading in regards to my dilemma. I have a board (PHPBB 3.0.4) that is very old and precious to it's members, somehow I would like to upgrade to the current PHPBB3 or if not possible just install the same version. Our ISP is upgrading it's servers and getting rid of the one the board is installed on, so I need to transfer to it. So far I've tried to backup up the old board (successful) and attempt to restore (unsuccessful) via from 3.0.4 to 3.3 using just phpbb3, via phpmyadmin, via bigdump, via adminer. All failed to transfer. I could backup the database and file structure and did copy ALL the /forums files via FTP. I've tried using compression, just text, everything I could think of ! the db is around 44mgs so I though phpmyadmin could handle it but not so. And bigdump isn't working with phpbb3.3. As for Adminer, I get errors saying db can't be found yada yada. One thing that did happen is when using myphpadmin, it could import around 3/4 of the tables and that's it. I tried importing new and also importing into a blank db to no avail. IF all I could do was to even install the old version of phpbb3.0.4 I'd be so happy. If anyone could possibly point me in the right direction or even if they know of a service that would perform the transfer, I would be extremely grateful !

Thank all !

You are running into php limits and if I am to understand you correctly the database is not really that large. You can check you hosts documentation for increasing the values for these in php.ini:

Code: Select all

upload_max_filesize
post_max_size
memory_limit
max_execution_time

Optionally does your host allow you to use SSH? See item 3 in the list.

I take it you meant 44 MB (44GB wouldn't be "small").
You can easily reduce the size by ± 50% by emptying the search tables (they can be repopulated after upgrading).
Spelling is freeware, which means you can use it for free.
On the other hand, it is not open source, which means you cannot change it or publish it in a modified form.

I told the user before we start to see if he can solve his problems with free support. It's not my style to take advantage. :) I don't have a lot of free time to follow and educate him, of course I'll do it soon if paid for. Anyway it's hosted on freeforum.org as I understand (tapatalk) and so probably there will be problems of various kinds not easy to predict if not alarmed in time.
Please PM me only to request paid works. Thx.
