It's just a topic icon.

Admin panel > posting tab > topic icons

Bottom right, add a new icon. Upload a tick (or whatever you want it to be) and it will show up on the list. Then when you edit a post (in a forum with topic icons allowed) you will have it as an option to add.

The option to add will be available if the permission setting allows it.
Can use topic/post icons >>> it's a group/user-forum permission
Spelling is freeware, which means you can use it for free.
On the other hand, it is not open source, which means you cannot change it or publish it in a modified form.

Thank you, that worked.

A few points for others that may be reading this later and interested in the same thing ...

Following the helpful guidance above, here are some additional clarifications:

to get a checkmark icon, assuming you are running Windows, right-click on the one provided in KevC's post above and select 'Save image as'

The icon should be uploaded to:
... your site .../phpbb/images/icons/misc

When editing the post series to have the icon added to, it appears you have to edit (as the administrator) the first post in the series and add the icon. I initially tried editing the last post in the series but that did not work.

Thanks for your help KevC and warmweer!

All other operating systems that support mouses with more than one button work the same way: a context menu for a right-click. Especially when using a web browser. Seriously, if this is needed to be described then the reader has no talent and should reconsider administrating a bulletin board - delegate that to people who're more fond about those basics.

No, using post icons is a user permission (not an administrator permission and not a moderator permission). And since it is a post icon it did work as intended - if you do it on the last post then (of course) that post's icon changed, not any other post's icon. And keep in mind that "last" is subjective, as posts in a topic can be listed in any order.

Well, the feature is basically topic icons, not post icons.
AFAIK there's no extension for post icons, but you can use emoticons in post/topic titles

No. And there is no extension because it is a post feature already, just like the subject can be chosen per post. Try it on your own installation or a demo.

I stand corrected.
The topic icon feature is in fact a topic/post icon feature and each post can have its own post icon.
Why after all these years I hadn't noticed that will remain a mystery forever

And I even copied the permission description and that didn't ring a bell.

As implemented here, the user is not able to use the check (tick) icon. We apply it by having a Moderator edit the first topic post to add it when the issue is solved.
