Can't administer users: Content Encoding Error

Post by shellshocker »

Hello phpbb support forum,

this is my first post. I use phpbb since version 3.x and had no problems so far. With the upgrade to 3.3.0 this changed. The upgrade worked without any problems. But when I click on administer user I'm getting the following error message in my browser:
Content Encoding Error

An error occurred during a connection to xy.forum.com.

Please contact the website owners to inform them of this problem.
The site is not loading. I tried different browsers, different styles (also prosilver) and deleted the cache several times.

I'm using Debian Buster with php 7.3, MariaDB, nginx and have full access to the server. I can provide you with any information you like.

Well. It's a private forum. I can provide any information you want. And remember: You need an admin account to reproduce the problem.

From what I can see none of those extensions, nor the style have been validated for phpBB3.3.
I'm not implying that one (or more) items of those is the culprit, however I would suggest testing your board with all those extensions disabled, perhaps even removed, and with prosilver.

Ow, wait: 3.3 has been released.

For either of the installations that are having this error, can you check whether your PHP error log confirms there is actually a PHP execution error happening, maybe with /includes/acp/acp_users.php somewhere in the call stack?

Your PHP error log may be it's own stand-alone error log file, or might be reported into your web server's error log, or might be something you can only see from your hosting control panel; depending upon your hosting provider's PHP implementation and configuration.

Warmeer's point regarding extensions was a really good reason for potentially having a PHP execution failure occurring "specifically when I do a particular ACP function", so I too was expecting more from the "disable all extensions" troubleshooting. But if it's happening even without any extensions, maybe we need to see whether the log has some clue regarding a PHP execution failure that is still able to occur here.

The premise being that "content encoding error" isn't "the real problem" here, but simply that a PHP execution problem was able to occur in a way where the execution failure itself or the error message PHP tried to emit caused the reply content to be corrupt or otherwise not be in the format indicated by the HTTP response headers. Which isn't necessarily what's actually happening; but is what I'm currently assuming as to why "content encoding error" would occur only on a specific ACP function.

0 log error from that call

I've disabled mod security and mod evasive in order to double test it again.

I'm gonna enable, this night, all logs and xdebug just to test it again...

So long as we're talking about the PHP error log (and not the phpBB Errors log in ACP, or some other error log that doesn't receive specifically the PHP errors) then I guess that rules that out too.

The additional tests like disabling mod_security certainly sound reasonable, and if we're "lucky" maybe it is some mod_security rule engaging against the way phpBB 3.3.0 presented some fields differently. Note if "it's mod_security" is true, one might also expect that the web server error log (in this case, still not phpBB's logs, and not necessarily the same log PHP errors log to) would be receiving details about the mod_security rule which has blocked the inbound request from being processed.

For myself, the point I would also be at now is to take a LAN trace of my communication to the phpBB server using Wireshark, in order to see what was actually wrong and/or what additional clues or text may be present in the HTTP response from the server which couldn't be decoded, and for which the web browser declares "content encoding error."

That's "trickier" if you have HTTPS enabled, since the communication is encrypted and you have to get your web browser to share key information with Wireshark in order to decrypt what you've captured. I'm certainly willing to do it for you, but since demonstrating the issue requires an administrator account for your board, so I'm sure you would prefer to handle it yourself if possible.

Like EA117 implied: this is outside phpBB already, as the board software itself would not complain about not being able to connect. Unless this is the complete content of the website you see please also attach a screenshot.

If using Wireshark and HTTPS turns out to be too difficult to you then ask one of us to do it for you. Change the password of the given administrator account, then provide the credentials to one of us thru PM if you trust any of us enough to not have any interest in harming you. I only wonder why an upgrade from 3.2.x to 3.3.0 should bring this problem up when it looks like HTTP or HTML is the problem.
