Board Index versus Home?

Post by ChinaGal »

Can someone please kindly briefly explain the difference between the Board Index and Home on a phpBB site?

On my site they both lead you to the same place, so Board Index seems redundant. Home would be good enough it seems. Or vice versus.

Is there any utility in having both? I assume there is a purpose for having both, or they wouldn’t both be there, but I can’t seem to work it out.

Many thanks for your help on understanding this.

I also just noticed on this site there is no Home it seems, only Board Index. So can you remove one of them?

Board index points to https://www.phpbb.com/community/ (the board itself)
Home would then be https://www.phpbb.com/ (the phpBB site)
We should embrace problems, without which there wouldn't be any solutions.

the "home" link is only there if you choose to set it up in your admin panel.
as said above, it is usually set to point to a home page if your board is not your home page.
however, you can name it whatever you want and link it wherever you wish from the settings in the admin panel.
you can also rename "board index" to whatever you wish in the same place in the admin panel:
"board settings"

Thank you both, but I am still a bit confused. Is there a way I can completely remove the “home” link from somewhere in ACP? I can’t seem to figure out how to do that. Thank you.

ACP> Board settings>:
Main website text: wrote: This text will be displayed as a link to your website homepage in the board’s breadcrumbs. If not specified, it will default to “Home”.
Board index text: wrote: This text is displayed as the board index in the board’s breadcrumbs. If not specified, it will default to “Board index”.

Thank you. Yes, I am aware of those settings. And at the moment I have not specified anything for either of them. Is there something I can enter into the home box which will remove Home from appearing at all and leave me with just Board Index? Thank you again.

What have you got in ‘Main website URL’?

The forum's URL, which is the domain name URL

phpBB is installed in the root directory on the server so just going to the site's domain name URL takes you right to the forum. It is not like this site where you have a slash after the domain name URL and followed by a sub folder.

Thank you.

Ok, remove that url, see:
Main website URL: wrote: If specified, a link to this URL will be prepended to your board’s breadcrumbs and the board logo will link to this URL instead of the forum index. An absolute URL is required, e.g. http://www.phpbb.com.
That entry is if you have a main website separate from the board so users can go to the website directly from the board.

Leave ‘Main website text’ and ‘Main website URL’ empty.

Perfect, thank you. Problem solved.

I guess I misunderstood that before thinking you needed to put your website's URL there or the site wouldn't load. I realize now that is not the case.

Thank you again.
