3.3 Test Forum Images Scrambled

Post by GentekPower »

Hey guys,

I setup a working test forum based on some recommendations here when I had asked about upgrading from 3.2.3 to 3.3. Test forum is live and working normally, however all of the user's attached images are a scrambled mess? I can't tell if this was an issue with the software upgrade or something to do with copying the database?

That's what they all seem to look like? The forum has a ton of images and I don't want to lose them all with this upgrade, so any insight into what has happened here would be much appreciated!!

you probably used filezilla without changing the setting about files with no extension using binary.

if this is the case, you need to change that setting in filezilla. set to do all transfers in binary and also set it to transfer files with no extensions to binary instead of the default ascii.

that is what has corrupted your images.

now, when you get ready to do the upgrade this should not be an issue because you will be leaving the "files" folder in place on the server.

however the whole point of doing a backup of all the files is just in case.
therefore, when you make that new backup from your live server you will be doing it with the proper settings in filezilla and if you actually have to use that backup it will work correctly.

oh, and be sure to use the correct upgrade method listed here:

luck,
robert

Thanks so much for the quick reply, I did use FileZilla! I will have to make the corrections and try again. I use the backup manager on Siteground to take backups so anything that's wrong can be quickly 'undone' right through cPanel.

Should I also set dotfiles as binary as well? (.htaccess) Truth be told, I really don't know the difference between how they are transferred and why it causes issues...

You were spot on BTW! I grabbed just the 'Files' folder from the live site using Binary mode and then dropped it into the working test forum using the same method and it fixed the images right away after a cache purge in FireFox.

it is really best to use binary for all file types when transferring using ftp.

a long time ago it was supposedly a good idea to transfer all text based files in ascii and all images/and exe files in binary.

that is no longer the case since binary does not affect any file type during transfers you can just set it to use binary for everything and you will be fine.
