How are the help pages built?

Post by php_mike »

How are these pages built? I think our site would benefit from an FAQ that is currently on a WP site, moved over to the phpbb site.

all the non forum pages here are custom built using the phpbb.com custom style.
I believe they were done the old fashion way.
however, for what you want, there is the "pages" extension found here:
https://www.phpbb.com/customise/db/extension/pages/
once you have created your custom "page" you can add the html/css for whatever web page you want.

do NOT add the html code for the "head" section of the web page you are copying.

no <html> , no <head>, no </head>, no </html>

just everything between <body> and </body>

Sorry, forgot to ask.

What about next to the quick links, the faq section. Could I add a second FAQ section like the default one?
I assume of all that stuff is in the DB and not just files.

I found others asking about this but most are just wanting to add URL links while I'd like to add a full faq in addition to the boards faq.

create the page you want using the "pages" extension.
I think there is a choice of where you put the link in the navbar when you create the new page.
if not, you can always just add it there yourself by editing the html in the navbar_header.html file.

Nope, most of them are made in symfony, and have no connection with the phpbb install at all.

I've not gotten around to this yet but I did find the Pages extension. What I'd like is something that looks just like the board FAQ but one about the services the board will be used to support. Could that extension be what I'm looking for?

The answer is “who knows”, give it a whirl and see.

Who knows? Those that know would know :).

I did look at the link you shared but as you said, no harm in trying the extension, I'll give it a shot.

You're the best placed person to answer that.

That page is build from phpBB's documentation repository: https://github.com/phpbb/documentation
And then more specifically, the documentation directory of that repository.
How the 'transformation' is taken place into the actual pages, is done through some Symfony services apparently.
This is not publicly available but in private GitHub repository.

But one has to guess, that it is being build with Sphinx and a custom theme, a theme that corresponds with the rest of the phpBB website.
Some of the create_* files in the repo can be of more insight, eg: https://github.com/phpbb/documentation/ ... te_docs.sh

Hower, I am just as much in the dark as you are, just listing the possibilities.

It would make for a nice extension, being able to have our own FAQ on the board instead of needing a wordpress or other site for that as we do now.
