Search Engine poor performance, Help.

Post by pearlchan »

I've noticed that the default search engine is working very poorly
At the ACP there is a maintenance area for tweeking the search functionality
There are four choices for the Admin to select
MySql full text
PostgreSQL Fulltext
phpBB Native Fulltext (active) is the one enabled which is not working well
Sphinx Fulltext

I tried searching the subject and haven't found an answer, yet.
does anyone have a pointer to a phpBB manual area which can show the 4 choices and what is good or bad for each?

I recently began to use ReColl and I am astounded at the extensive results, which are a great help.
Whatever was on my Windos machine was handicapped.
Would there be a way to harness ReColl to the BB?
Thanks in advance for any help at this.

Maybe you can explain what you mean with "very poorly"?

See viewtopic.php?t=762865 and many other posts.

Depends on what you mean by performance. If you mean poor results they are all about the same.

If you mean it's slow Sphinx is lightning fast however you need install Sphinx on the server.

It's missing many searches. Things I know are there, are not retrieved.
It's not indexing the site.

"working on the backend of the server" seems would be more difficult than I could achieve at this time.
Is there a simple way to get the search engine to index the site?

normally, every single word in every single post is in the search tables in the database.
if this is not true in your case you may need to rebuild the search index.

go to the admin panel, delete the one that is there and then rebuild it.
I would choose the one you are currently using which is probably the default.
rebuild it using that. test. if it does not help you, delete that one and rebuild it using one of the other options and test.

this will be time consuming depending on how many posts you have etc.
