Broken: Quick Links and Search

Post by Catsmack »

Hi. I recently did a upgrade to 3.3.0. The board seems to be working great EXCEPT ...

1) All selections in the "Quick Links" drop down menu result in a "This Page is not Working" error except for the "Members" and "The Team" selections.
2) The search bar on the header of every page also fails.

I can't crack the code on this. Any thoughts would certainly be appreciated.

The board address is: http://www.audiemurphy.com/msgb/

A blank page (error 500) in general means a PHP error.
These errors are logged in the error log from your webserver.

Thanks

How did you perform the upgrade and from what release? Did you follow Upgrading from 3.2 to 3.3 step by step?

It would be helpful if you used the Support Request Template Generator to provide more details about your board and how you did the upgrade.

Did you review Common problems while upgrading to 3.3.0, particularly making sure all your extensions are compatible with phpBB 3.3?

Added: What search backend are you using? Any chance it is Sphinx? If so, check viewtopic.php?f=64&t=2554986 as there is a known problem.

My upgrade was from a very old version to the latest. I hadn't upgraded in maybe 2 years.

I did download the proper package and did it step by step. But I must have fumbled. I'm vague on details I know ... I wish I was smarter.

I will look at your comments carefully and do some exploring and checking. Your questions are pretty clear but I am unsure of the answers at the moment. I want to check out that article too.

I would like to ask if a fresh installation is a good idea. I know enough to back up the database and to be ready to re-enter it when a new install is made. Do you think it is too soon to do this? Would it be a possible solution?

Try to do de update again, I think you are missing some files.

Or try to upload the search.php first, that is the one that gives the problem.

Yes. I didn't see anything there that clicked ... but I did check my search back end. Right now it says "PhPBB Native Fulltext". I don't know if that is right or not. I can tell you that when I installed the package, the search feature and quick links failed immediately.

Should I reset it to MySQL Fulltext?

as far as a backup goes, you should have done that before you started anything else.
you always make a backup of the database before making and changes or udates etc.

a fresh installation is almost never required.
however, you may need to install all new files which is the correct method of upgrading to begin with.
that is not a fresh installation.
a fresh installation would create a brand new board with no members, no posts etc.

I fixed the problem by doing a full package reinstall. Apparently I was missing a file or a file was corrupt.
  • I downloaded the full install package 3.3.0
  • I followed the directions on the Full Install Download page and deleted the folders in the unzipped folder which it mentioned, replacing them with the original folders in the old site (files, images, etc).
  • I uploaded the new board folder with the replaced folders to my host site
  • I moved the config file over from the old board to the new one.
  • I changed the original corrupt board's directory name (keeping it as a backup)
  • I renamed the new board's directory to reflect the original board's name.
  • I also removed the new board's install folder.
So the new folder worked nicely AND the Quick Links and the Search Bar operated admirably :D

Thanks for all your help.
