Maximum Number of Characters in Post Settings

Post by man_o_man »

I received a notification that a post was not allowed because it exceeded the maximum number of characters of 60,000 in the Post Settings. So my questions are:

1. why is the default setting (if that is actually the default) at 60,000 characters to begin with, and why not zero and leave it to the site admin to increase the setting as he pleases?

I just went through several hours, yes, several hours, to manually decrease the setting to 0 . So why not separate the option to set the setting to zero in another field which says something like "Click Here to Set to 0" and then let the system take care of adjusting the settings, instead of having the site admins waste so much time just to remove the maximum number of characters for posts?

I would agree that having a default of 60,000 when the database will allow 16.7 million characters seems a bit strange, unless there is a restriction with some database type other than MySql.

I would suggest posting it in the Bug Tracker so that the devs can decide.

I cannot recall ever having hit that limit, or of being aware that anyone else had so setting it as unlimited by default would seem sensible to me.

Not sure why it would have taken "several hours" to enter one character.

There seemed to be no way to enter one character without first decreasing the number down to zero, and decreasing the number was what took several hours. You can try it.

You can try it.
Just have - highlight the value (60000), delete, enter 0, Submit - took all of five seconds

Hi
However, in the PCA it is clearly specified this:

ACP > General > General configuration > Message settings
Maximum number of characters per message:
The number of characters allowed in a message. Put "0" for unlimited.
Sorry for my English ... I do my best!
