if you copied and pasted that response from bluehost support, it makes no sense.

I also suggest you do the upgrade again using the full package and follow the instructions exactly.

I also suggest that if you ever contact bluehost support again you don't even bother with whoever answers and
ask for level two support or a supervisor etc.

the people that answer at the first level usually don't really have a clue what is going on.

I suggest you start all over again, but on a personal webserver and follow the upgrade instructions using the full package.
I've done that three times, and have yet to get a functional install.

BlueHost set my Forum on PHP7.2, even though all other sites are on 7.4. I don't know why. The original install errors referred to unsupported PHP versions when it was on 7.4. So, they've been trying various settings. We finally got it to install, but now the screen is blank.

I don't have a personal server. So I depend on BlueHost for tech support. They find that the latest error messages point to syntax errors. To me that sounds like errors in the software. Could it be something on the host servers?

All of my other websites are working fine on PHP7.4, so I don't know why phpBB3 has a problem with it.

I was bumped up to a higher level a couple of weeks ago. But I still can't install or login to my forum. Most of my recent chats at BlueHost have been at level one. They have been trying to be helpful, but they point the finger at the software. So, I'm in the middle between fingers pointing both ways.

yep, that can definitely be frustrating.

keep this in mind though, hundreds of thousands of people have installed and run phpBB on just about every type of hosting company you can imagine. hundreds if not thousands a day do this with no problems.

bluehost used to be a reputable host but something has changed lately and many people are having problems installing and running things like phpBB on their system.

do a search here for bluehost and you will see many recent problems being posted about.

many of those people change hosts and amazingly have no problem at all getting phpBB installed and setup in just a few minutes.

good luck,
robert

I don't have a personal server.

There's WAMP, XAMPP, LAMP, EasyPHP and so many others but seeing your lack of experience I would suggest USBWebserver (if you're on Windows) as that is the most simple one to install and requires almost no configuration.

https://usbwebserver.yura.mk.ua/
8.6.1 with php 5.6
8.6.2 with php 7.1

https://sourceforge.net/projects/usbwebserver/
8.6.5 with php 7.4

BlueHost support looked at the error message above, that ended with << line 312 >>, and said there was a syntax error. Here's their reply "

<< There is a code throw new OutOfBoundsException(sprintf('The argument "%s" doesn't exist.', $index)); on line 312 and showing error >>

<< I could also see that the error shows syntax error, unexpected 't' (T_STRING), expecting ',' or ')' >>
I must disagree with Lumpy Burgertushie, this error message does make sense since the single quote in doesn't is not escaped (it would even be better to use ´ instead) and thus the language parser doesn't know what to do with t exist. and it throws an error.
So search the language files (I would assume it is with an extension) and correct it.

The TS mentioned (in the SRT) : no extensions.
The worst error is actually trying to upgrade and not having a backup.

@ jhearcht2
Doesn't Blue host have scheduled backups which you could reset? At least that would be a step forward compared to you last backup-from last year (if I read you correctly).

@warmweer:
There is no such language string in the phpBB core language files (I checked) so it is pretty obviously to me it is in an extension. And 'no extensions' could as well mean 'no extensions activated' which will leave him still with all the language files (although that shouldn't affect the starting of phpBB).

You are correct and it also crossed my mind.
However ... unless there are clear indications that the SRT was filled in incorrectly, I prefer to stick to the information given (at least until it's its clear that there's info missing).

The facts seem to indicate something else, but perhaps he is following my advice and starts looking for that language string, corrects it and everything should be fine (hopefully).

I do have a backup of the old files that the instructions said to same and replace in the new install package. Is there something else that's needed?

I do have a backup from last year, but it will lose a year's worth of contents. BlueHost was supposed to replace the new install with their latest backup, but I don't think that ever happened. In all the dozens of chats, I can't remember for sure. All I know is that the installation finally worked, but my page is blank.

Which folder or dir are the user contents saved in?

This is a non-professional, non-commercial forum, and I'm an amateur. So I don't know how to look for a language string. Any suggestions? What file to look in? The Language dir has an index.html. But when opened in browser it is blank.

All data is stored in the database. Database backups made using the phpBB ACP backup feature are stored in the /store folder.

I don't know how to find things in the database. I have browsed phpMyAdmin, but I don't see anything useful.

I guess my best option now is to try again to have BlueHost restore their most recent backup.

If the PHP version is a possible reason, it's easy enough to write a little script to show PHP's configuration:

Code: Select all

<?php phpinfo(); ?>
I don't know how to do scrips in phpBB. I can see the current version on BlueHost. But the install has not accepted any of the versions we've tried, from 5.6 to 7.4

One BH agent replied :
If I update the PHP 5.6 or 7.4 get an error You are running an unsupported PHP version. Please upgrade to PHP 7.1.3 or higher before trying to install or update to phpBB 3.3

Apparently, the version on the host is not the problem. But something in the software is not recognizing or accepting it.

I have backups of directories : Config ; Files ; Store ; Images ; Prosilver ; and Serenity.
Are the sites content changes stored in any of these?

Last Week a BH agent reported this :
but there is issue with scripts /public_html/phpBB3/vendor/symfony/dependency-injection/Definition.php on line 312 scripts on this location causing the issue, I suggest to check with developer,

Can you look at that line in the phpBB3.3 software, to see what the problem is?
