How do i change to an https Server?

Post by Froggyted »

I'm just in the process of setting up my first phpbb Board and am a little uneasy that my http domain might put people off joining due to login information not being secure. If i change to an https server would i have to upload the Board again from scratch or is it just a case of changing something in the Server or Board settings? I don't want to go too far in configuring my Board and find i have to start again.

No, it’s a server side thing, have a look in your cPanel, a lot of hosts have it as an option. If you can’t find it ask your host to do it.

Ok, thanks. I think i have to pay extra for an https upgrade. As long as i can go ahead and configure my Board and then upgrade to an https Server at a later date without any major issues with the Board then that's fine. I'm going to open a ticket with my host support chat and get some advice from their side.

Most hosts these days offer a free SSL certificate which will give a sufficient level of security for a phpBB board. If you are running something like a shopping cart then you may need a higher level of certificate which you would have to pay for.

On most server configurations the same files are used to serve https or http. Ideally when you add https certificate you also add a .htaccess rule that redirects http requests to https. If you have a Cpanel hosting control panel they actually provide free certs but your host can enable/disable it. Minimally you should have option to install the cert yourself which is not that difficult. You can obtain one for free from service like Lets Encrypt.

https://letsencrypt.org/

If your host does not at least provide the option to install your own cert I'd suggest finding new host.

The biggest issue about waiting is links that are posted in your forum and elsewhere. Those can be handled with the redirect. Optionally the links inside of posts can fixed with database query.

When you switch it you need to go into phpBB's control paenl and underr cookie settings enable secure cookie. For server server settings use:

Server protocol: https://
Server port: 443

You are right, my host does, although it creates a http://web82.secure-secure.co.uk/ prefix to my website url and for some reason the forum board page doesn't display the SSL certification. Possibly due to something not configured correctly in my directory, i'll take a closer look.

When David said free SSL what he meant was for your own domain.
