Stuck using automatic update from 3.2.2 to 3.3.1

Post by kaspir »

I followed these instructions: https://www.phpbb.com/support/documents ... pdate_auto

I then manually deleted the files that it instructed me to, however this one is giving me an issue: https://prnt.sc/v1v4b6

After clicking 'Update Files' it brings me right back to: https://prnt.sc/v1v4sp

It's simply not allowing me to continue. If I use the 'Check Files' again (my only option) it only repeats this all over and never allows me to proceed.

I've downloaded the file.. I even tried removing the file completely from installation. It will then tell me that it will be added, but doesn't.. it just repeats itself.

Never mind, I just downloaded the full package and pulled the culprit file from that. Once uploaded to existing installation, everything worked as intended for the update. However, the merging process didn't seem to work for me as intended here. I'll figure out later what modifications I had done to the original.

unless you have been editing the core files for some reason, there is no need to use the auto update.
from 3.2 to 3.3 is an upgrade not an update and the full package upgrade instructions is what you should be following.

at this point I would suggest that you go ahead and replace all of the existing files with the ones from the full package except for what the instructions tell you to leave alone.
you apparently already have done the database upgrade part so you would not need to bother with that again.

the reason I suggest this is because there may be other files that are either missing or are old versions that need to be replaced.

luck,
robert

to what files? some times people consider changes to the style files as core changes. that is usually not an issue.

So you edited core 3.2 functions and expected them to work out of the box on 3.3?
You do realise that the instructions you followed (https://www.phpbb.com/support/documents ... pdate_auto) are for an update (implying staying within the 3.2 series).
The 3.3 instructions (https://www.phpbb.com/downloads/3.3/update) mention:
[ Automatic Update Package ]

If updating from phpBB 3.1.x or 3.2.x then please see our guide for the recommended updating method.
and point to https://www.phpbb.com/support/docs/en/3 ... upgrade31/ which are the same as https://www.phpbb.com/support/docs/en/3 ... upgrade32/
Spelling is freeware, which means you can use it for free.
On the other hand, it is not open source, which means you cannot change it or publish it in a modified form.

I never mentioned my expectations, that is speculation. I know with my hard edits, I will have even more issues. This is why I don't update often.

I realize that there was an auto-update avail for 3.2.2 --> 3.3 ??? And I followed the instructions I was lead to.

I also read: https://www.phpbb.com/support/docs/en/3 ... upgrade32/

And even tho I was successful in my 2nd post here... I am doing test runs of this update/upgrade on my cloned server, so no worries! I'm just playing with it.. I plan on trying the full next.

Thanks for all good intentions. My only purpose was to possible point out that the auto-update wasn't MERGING the files like it may have intended. Although, perhaps that's what you are pointing at! Again, ty.

@OP: Please use the quote function only when it is needed to make your reply clear and only quote the parts necessary not the whole post every time. Excessive quoting (especially of long messages and/or multiple images) makes reading the post extremely difficult and tiresome.
