I use MAMP which I assume is similar. The app should have an htdocs or www folder in it. Put the phpBB folder in there and launch the app to navigate to it.

I would not recommend using MAMP or any packaged PHP solution on MacOS.

here's a full walkthrough on setting up your environment for PHP development.

It's perfectly fine for just testing a phpBB board at home.

Restricted forum access

Post by experimenter »

I want to restrict access to the forum pages to selected registered users such that forum content is not generally visible to casual web browsers. How would I set that up?

Change the access level of the Guest group's forum permissions.

Thank you for all that. I have read through the information but do not understand how it solves my problem.

If anybody, nothing to do with the forum, is surfing the net and hits the URL for this forum I assume that person will call up the forum and have all the pages available to browse. I want to keep all the contents private except for registered users.

Permissions
group forum permissions
guests
select all the forums
no access

You might want to do that for bots as well but your site will be hard to find.

Set the relevant permissions for the Guest group (and you probably should limit bot access also).
But in order to avoid any one registering and seeing the whole board, user the Newly Registered Group and restrict their access until you have verified them.

Spelling is freeware, which means you can use it for free.
On the other hand, it is not open source, which means you cannot change it or publish it in a modified form.
