How to restrict registration to the forums?

Hi,

I have created a forum and would like to restrict access to only those people that have purchased another service from us.

However, we want the forum to be readable and searchable by the public and Google etc. Then, if they want to register to comment, they cannot unless they purchase one of our service on our website.

I read this topic viewtopic.php?t=2481581 but I don't think those instructions fit what I want to achieve?

You could use the antispam Q&A.

If they buy anything you can email them a registration code.
Then set up the Q&A to say enter the reg code you've been sent.

If you make it a random string of characters, they can only sign up if they know that code.
