phpBB Board V3.3.X and PHP 8.0

Post by BeBop »

How far in the future will V3.3.X run under PHP 7.3 - 7.4 until it has to become compatible with PHP 8, or will that be a new version eg 3.4.x completely?

Thank you BeBop

Most probably php 7.3 and 7.4 will be ok for phpBB3.3.x. Currently there is support for php 8.0.x but there are still glitches in phpBB 3.3.x with php 8 and these will be tackled within the 3.3.x series when they are identified.

Thank you for the information Warmweer, could you give me a time forecast for phpBB board v 3.3.X continuing to run under PHP 7.3 and 7.4. Say for example until December 2022. We are currently running 3.3.1 under PHP 7.3.28.

Many thanks BeBop

I would expect all 3.3.x releases to continue functioning with php 7.3 and 7.4.
It's not because a php version is EOL that everyone stops using it or that hosts stop making it available.
phphBB 3.4 (or 4.0 if 3.4 is bypassed) may (or may not) require php 8.

As long as PHP 7.4 is supported, keep using it. Wait until "Active Support" or "Security Support" ends for it then switch to PHP 8.0. That will give time for phpBB developers time to find any remaining incompatibilities and fix them.

Not really though. Bugs aren't found by developers, they're reported by users. Nobody is looking for bugs as long as the tests pass.
I wrote the library that handles markup in phpBB 3.2+.
